A QUIET MIND

‘Quiet minds cannot be perplexed or frightened, but go on in
fortune or misfortune at their own private pace, like a
clock during a thunderstorm’.

-Robert Louis Stevenson

In order for me to attain a quiet mind, which I have found to be a glorious
state in which to remain, I need to practice Silence, Solitude and Meditation. A
quiet mind does not simply arrive becasue I want it to.

But when I enter into Silence, accompanied by God, I find my busy mind begins to
unravel, and I begin to move about more slowly and at a more consciously even
pace. As I refrain from speaking, and move into a place without noise (I may
turn off the T.V., or move from the company and conversation of others into a
room on my own), here in this place I begin to quieten down. I find my true
centre, and am able to tap into that deep well (which is inside all of us) which
contains the wisdom and insight I need.

When I place myself in Solitude for some hours, I find myself noticing my
environment and I begin to see things in nature that had previously eluded me. I
might see an intricate spider’s web, or notice a new bud on our camellias, and
as I do, I begin to absorb beauty in new ways. Solitude provides for me a way to
quieten my mind because instead of talking and involvement, I am detached and
free from the busy-ness around me.

And when I elect to specifically meditate upon God, I find my mind empties
itself from the clutter that has been entangling it, and begins to fill with
gifts from God – peace, tranquility, gentleness, and I achieve for a time that
quiet mind of which Stephenson speaks. Here, together with my God, I discover a
new generosity welling up from within me, fresh love for myself and others, and
a new sense of the harmony of life.

A quiet mind is a non-dualistic state of serenity for me. In this state new life
abounds from within. I am free ‘to love and serve the world’.
