TRANSFORMATION
The story of the woman caught in adultery is a good example of Jesus
giving people the ¢â‚¬Å“gift of guilt. ¢â‚¬ He said two things to her: (1)
¢â‚¬Å“I do not condemn you ¢â‚¬ (shame is not the answer) and (2) ¢â‚¬Å“Go and
sin no more ¢â‚¬ (take ownership of yourself and then you can change).
In this he teaches lessons approximate to steps 4, 5 and 6 of the
Twelve-Step program. We must:
4. Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admit to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the
exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Be entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
It seems we must fully own our defects of character, bringing
them to full consciousness, or they will not just ¢â‚¬Å“go away. ¢â‚¬ You
cannot heal what you do not acknowledge.
