Does this describe many in society today? "They are selfish,
thinking only of themselves; they are rude and ungrateful; some will be
violent, fierce and merciless; they will be pleasure seekers; they
reject God and His power and authority; the young will disobey their
parents…" No, these are not my words but those of the Apostle
Paul when writing to his close friend and convert Timothy.
What people do today to amuse themselves is always a topic of
conversation. It was in A.D.64. Paul was in prison and was concerned
enough to remind Timothy of the need for strength to resist these evils.
Nothing has changed except that there are now countless more
opportunities to stray from the true path in the name of
"entertainment". A recent newspaper article highlighted the
things some people do now to occupy themselves. Once it was reading,
fishing and walks in the country – now it is pornography, drugs, social
crime. Television, which came in with such a fanfare in the 50’s, has
largely degenerated into a vehicle for violence and depravity. Even
family shows depict broken marriages and divorce as almost inevitable
and defacto relationships are now called "partnerships". We
must wonder what message young people will draw from this.
I know that there is nothing new about all of this. After all, the
Roman Empire collapsed for similar reasons although their substitute for
television was entertainment of a more violent kind. It’s just that we
should have learned something from the past instead of repeating it.
Someone once suggested that it’s a cycle that society goes through every
so often. But why?
As usual, the Bible explains it all (what a marvellous text book it
is). "But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner
of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus
Christ, might be given to those who believe." I remain convinced
that no one is permanently contented in sinful pursuits. My counselling
experience points to a disturbed state of mind in those who acknowledge
their sin but see a righteous example in others. So example is
important.
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of
witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so
easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out
for us."
What an awesome responsibility.
Have a good week.
