PRAYER IN PARAGUAY SEEDS SPIRITUAL REVIVAL

For 12 years, a prayer marathon has brought Christians together in the South American country of Paraguay. The 24/7 uninterrupted prayer involves thousands of people from all Christian denominations, in 85 locations around the country. “Christian groups, churches, denominations, are understanding that the personal, spiritual revival movement reaching out to our neighbours and the country in general, is accomplished through prayer,” church-goer Hugo Sanz said. “Personal contact, communion, a new sense of friendship with our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. Sharing His Word,” he continued. “I have no doubt that this will produce a national revival that will be a blessing for all.”

Some individuals report miracles taking place since they have gathered to pray, including people healed without any medical explanation. But above all, these believers pray for the gospel of Jesus Christ to reach the whole the country, including government authorities. “There is a biblical mandate to pray for our country’s authorities and we are pleading to God that they be driven by divine wisdom to do the best for our people,” Zully Yegros, another churchgoer, said. For the first time in history, on the national holiday August 15, Paraguay President Federico Franco attended an evangelical thanksgiving and worship service along with other government leaders.

Pastor Walter Neufeld, who chairs Jesus Responds Foundation, one of the largest Christian foundations in the country, said he believes God is using the spiritual revival to open doors for evangelism. “There have been big changes because if you go back seven years ago, in the statistics, Paraguay had 2 to 3 percent evangelical Christians, similar to Cuba or Uruguay,” Neufeld said. “Never in the history of our country have we had a president who attended evangelical services, and now we have,” he continued. “We could never get into state institutions. Today we can, freely, with the support from the secretary of education and culture. To me, these are all indicators of revival.”

Although there are no precise statistics on the percentage of evangelical Christians in the Paraguayan population, most churches report a growth of 10 to 15 percent annually, with thousands of baptisms nationwide. For Pastor Emilio Abreu, who leads one of the largest evangelical churches in Paraguay, spiritual revival is particularly reaching young people. “We believe there will be a great empowering of the lives of young people because of the strength they have, the passion they have.” Abreu, who leads Family Worship Centre, said. “The church has never understood them. They haven’t given a platform for the youth – in the arts, culture, music, painting, theatre, movies.”

“Now we have people with a vision to do all of this, to turn our young people loose, open their minds, anoint and empower them to go and conquer the nation,” he continued. “Every month almost a thousand new people come to our churches, and they’re converted. And this is growing,” he added. “Now we are moving towards using the mass media and it’s going to be a tsunami!” These opportunities highlight a crucial need. A survey conducted by the Bible Institute of Asunci ƒ ³n, shows a large percentage of evangelical leaders nationwide have no theological education. The challenge is to encourage a deep Bible study amongst Church leaders, to carry the gospel to the whole country.

AN EPIDEMIC OF TERROR IN NIGERIA

Emboldened by a volatile political climate, terrorists have unleashed a string of attacks against the Christian community in northern Nigeria revealing a deeply disturbing trend. St. John’s Church in Bauchi, became the target of a deadly attack last month killing two people and injuring many others. Police say that the suicide bomber detonated the explosives packed in his car when he was stopped at the gates of the church. Many sustained critical injuries. In a country plagued by ethno-religious violence, churches are caught in the crossfire. These sort of attacks have become the modus operandi of violent terrorists who appear to make no distinction between peaceful worshippers and violent criminals.

Recently a gunman opened fire in a church killing 19 worshippers, including the pastor, and wounded many others. In June of this year suicide bomb attacks on three churches left at least 21 dead and scores injured. Recent atrocities like the Easter Day bombing in Kaduna and the Christmas Day attacks in Madalla have claimed the most number of lives. The alleged perpetrators of the violence are the Boko Haram. Dubbed as the Nigerian Taliban, the group had its origins in a radical Islamist mosque nearly adecade ago. Initially fuelled by a bitter animosity against the Government and authorities, they have now redirected their attention onto Christians in the largely Muslim north.

A loose translation of the phrase Boko Haram (non-Islamic education is sacrilege and is forbidden) reflects a deep-seated hatred of any politicalor social activity that stems from Western society. They violently discourage voting in elections, wearing shirts and trousers and receiving a secular education. In pursuing its goal of creating an Islamic state adhering strictly to Sharia law, Boko Haram set up a mosque and Islamic school. Many poor Muslim families from across Nigeria and some neighbouring countries enrolled their children in these schools, which later became training grounds for fighters and militants. Militants have threatened that Christians will have no peace until they convert to Islam.

The Boko Haran’s first acts of violence involved simple bombs and drive-by shooting targeting the police and priests. Boko Haram originally concentrated their attacks on certain northern cities, however they are now spreading into central Nigeria where enmity between different ethnicities and religious groups already exists. Christian leaders have encouraged their flock to exercise restraint but the patience of their people is wearing out and could result in a vicious retaliation. The army has killed 35 and detained 60 suspected Boko Haram militants, who they believe are behind the attacks that have killed over 1,400 people since they began their insurgent activities.

Please pray:

*   for the speedy recovery of those who have been injured in recent deadly attacks and for God’s comfort and peace to be with those who have lost family and friends in the attacks.

*   for the protection of Christian Believers in Nigeria. Pray too that Christians in central Nigeria would exercise restraint even in the face of terrible persecution.

*   for a supernatural transformation of the lives of the members of the Boko Haram, so they may turn away from their violent ways to Christ’s redeeming love.   Pray that the vicious cycle of poverty, that forces disturbed young men to violence, would be broken by a powerful encounter with Christ.

CHURCH IN INDIA FACES UNRELENTING PERSECUTION

Persecution of the Church in India is unrelenting due to the Hindu nationalists’ incitement of racial and religious hatred; the impunity afforded to the persecutors; and the authorities’ lack of political will. The following incidents are typical — and the tip of the iceberg. Last month 12 Hindu extremists disrupted a prayer meeting in Orissa, verbally abusing the believers and chasing them into the forest. When a pastor tripped and fell, the Hindus beat him, leaving him with head injuries and fractures in both arms. On 11 September police in  Uttar Pradesh, accused Christians of ‘forcible conversions’. The next day, armed Hindus arrived and threatened the believers, demanding they ‘return’ to Hinduism.

Reacting against news of an impending Christian inter-caste marriage, the Hindus drove the bride-to-be and her family out of the area. On 7 September Pastor John Pargy was distributing gospel tracts quietly when he was accused of insulting Hinduism. He was then assaulted and arrested. On 4 September Pastor Anand Nirala was arrested in Jangir Champa, Chhattisgarh, after Hindus accused him of ‘forced’ conversions, insulting Hindu deities and disturbing social harmony. On 1 September Hindu extremists in Balod, Chhattisgarh, stoned a church and beat the pastor and believers. The next day, a 600-strong mob returned and terrorised the believers, eventually driving them from their homes.

In August a group of Hindu extremists burst into a prayer meeting in Tamil Nadu, and attacked the believers, leaving two seriously injured. They accused the believers of ‘forced conversions’, and rampaged through the village. One Christian was beaten to death. On 29 August the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) had a minor victory when the High Court of Himachal Pradesh struck out one section of the Freedom of Religion Act (HPFRAct), a law that regulates conversions. The judge struck out section 4, which mandated that anyone intending to change their religion must inform the administration 30 days before conversion takes place — essentially to obtain permission — or else face a fine.

The judge ruled that section 4 violated a person’s right to privacy, but did not agree that the HPFR Act violated the constitutional right to religious freedom. In India, ‘freedom of religion’ is essentially understood as freedom from religious ‘interference’.   According to the High Court, freedom of religion must be subject to the interests of public law and order. Though Christians are said to have full rights, those rights are restricted if they lead to Hindu rioting. Therefore religious dictators incite violence, blame the victim and extract concessions. Though appeasement may work in the short term, in the long term it is disastrous as it legitimises intolerance, justifies violence and fuels persecution.

PLEASE PRAY:

*   for God to grace India with awakening, so that Indians will see they are being fed lies and deprived of religious freedom by religious dictators out to perpetuate their own caste privilege.

*   for God to grace the Indian government with discernment, conviction and courage to deal with Hindu nationalist propaganda before it devours the nation. Pray too that the Church will continue to grow in spite of repression and violent persecution, as God adds to her number daily those who are being saved.

*   that the LORD of hosts will be a protective shield and strong, safe fortress to every Indian believer, particularly those pastors and evangelists who risk life and liberty to share the Gospel and serve the people in the name of Jesus.

MAJOR TERROR ATTACK ON CHURCHES IN KENYA FOILED

A member of the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab rebel group has been sentenced to 59 years in prison, after Special Crimes Prevention Unit officers raided an apartment in Nairobi, foiling a major terrorist plan to attack churches in Nairobi. Police issued fresh terror alerts after two men, Kenyan national Abdulmajid Mohammed (26) and Somali national Suleiman Aden (24), were arrested on suspicion of being part of a larger terror cell in the final preparations of a major attack. Officers recovered four suicide vests riggedwith hundreds of metal ball bearings from the apartment, as well as two improvised explosive devices rigged with ball bearings, four AK-47 assault rifles, 480 bullets and 12 hand grenades.

At the time of their arrest, the suspects allegedly confessed to be planning to target St. Andrew’s Church, St Paul’s University Chapel, Christ Is The Answer Ministries and the Holy Family Basilica Church. Police said the rebels had finalised plans to hit the churches and that the attacks could have been launched as early as that weekend. Had the group been successful, the effects would have been devastating – the four churches have more than 20,000 congregants, including a number of highly placed Kenyan government officials and politicians. Thousands of children would also have been attending services and Sunday Schools.

Handing down her verdict, the Magistrate said the length of Abdulmajid Yassin Mohammed’s 59 year sentence was in the interest of ‘national security’. “I have considered the interest of the country and national security of the state as well as the fact that the accused is not remorseful.” she told the court. “I convict him on his own plea of guilty.”For the members of the four churches in Nairobi, the news came as a relief – but as always, there is still work to be done; eight suspects, believed to include the mastermind of the operation, a bomb maker, suicide bombers and other associates monitoring the mission, remain on the run.

Please pray:

*     for the protection and safety of all church goers in Kenya

*     for godly wisdom, guidance and strength for the leaders of these Churches

*     giving thanks to God for the timely intervention of the Special Prevention Unit against these attacks.

GLOBAL RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE ON THE RISE

The recent spasm of religious violence in the Middle East is part of a larger pattern: A major survey recently released finds official and unofficial hostility toward religious freedom rising in every corner of the world – including in the U.S., which is no longer ranked among world’s most tolerant nations. The annual study, compiled by the Pew Research Centre’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, concluded that three-fourths of the world’s population lives in countries that impose significant political and social restrictions on religion, with the United States being moved out of the list of countries with the best records on religious tolerance.”

According to the study, the U.S. moved from the low to moderate category of government restrictions on religion for the first time,” Pew said for the first time the U.S. saw a rise, particularly at the state and local level, in incidents restricting religious groups from practicing their faith. Among problems cited in the U.S. as keeping people from practicing their religion, were restrictions on the wearing of religious attire or symbols, obtaining zoning or building permits for new religious school and houses of worship, a climate of increasing “social hostilities” including a rise in”religion-related terrorist attacks” and an increase in workplace discrimination complaints based on religion.

Among the world’s 25 most-populous countries, Egypt, Indonesia, Russia, Myanmar (Burma), Iran, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nigeria were cited as the most restrictive on religion based on government restrictions and social hostilities. The U.S, along with Brazil, Japan, Italy, and Congo registered as the most-populous nations with the fewest restrictions and hostilities, Pew researchers said. Ask the Lord to shine His light on those caught in the crosshairs of persecution across the world. The Lord warned of this problem, but he also said that He would “never leave nor forsake” those who called upon His name. Pray for God’s hand of blessing over all those in need of His divine cover.

AMERICANS DON’T KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT JESUS

Following the recent unveiling of a papyrus fragment in which Jesus reportedly says, “my wife,” many historians are now questioning what people know about the life of Jesus. Aside from the bearded, longhaired, Sunday-school image of Jesus, a new poll reveals that Americans are not at all familiar with the life of this man. According to the poll, most people do not grasp Jesus’ influence on culture despite recognizing His image some 2,000 years after his death. Sixty-six percent believe Jesus is the most-recognized figure in history, but most were not able to correctly answer questions regarding His influence. The survey, conducted on behalf of Zondervan, also found that:

.41 percent of Americans believe that mans’ interpretation of Jesus’teachings hurt women’s rights more than helped them, contradictory to the biblical account.

.89 percent of Americans do not know that Jesus pioneered the concepts of universal literacy and education; 27 percent believed it to be Socrates..

47 percent of Americans do not know that Jesus was the first man to advocate the idea of societal inclusion and equality.

From christenings to weddings to sickrooms to funerals, it is in Jesus’ name that people are hatched, matched, patched and dispatched. It’s a shame that Americans don’t really know more about the most influential man in history.

TANZANIA: CHRISTIANS THREATENED BY ISLAMISATION
———————————————–

by Elizabeth Kendal

Tanzania’s population is 31 percent Muslim and 54 percent Christian,
although church attendance is only about eight percent (Operation World
7th Edition). According to the Catholic Bishop of Kondoa Diocese, Bernadin
Mfumbusa, Islamisation is advancing. Since the mid-1980s, itinerant
preachers from Saudi Arabia and the Sudan have been entering the country
and spreading intolerant, fundamentalist Islam. Consequently, Muslims are
becoming more assertive with their political demands and more aggressive
with their verbal attacks. Demands are growing louder for Sharia Law and
Kadhi (Islamic) Courts, for Fridays to be public holidays and for Tanzania
to join the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC). Bishop Mfumbusa
recently told the Catholic Charity, Aid to the Church in Need, that there
has been a marked increase in veiled women and Qur’anic schools
(madrassas), adding, ‘In the church schools, which are also attended by
Muslim children, we must be very sensitive and cautious to avoid any
undesirable incidents.’

As in Kenya, US-mandated anti-terror laws enacted post 9/11 have fuelled
division along religious lines. Christians are generally supportive and
Muslims strongly object, claiming the laws purposely target them. In the
lead-up to the 2005 elections the Christian-dominated Revolutionary Party,
Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), successfully wooed the Muslim vote by promising  to establish Kadhi (Islamic) courts. However, after winning the election  CCM shelved its promise. Religion has since come to dominate Tanzanian  politics. Tensions are rising.

On 10 October Zakaria Hamisis Mbonde (12) was walking home from Qur’anic
school, carrying his Qur’an, when he came across his Christian friend,
Emmanuel Mwinuka (13). When Emmanuel asked Zakaria if he could see his
Qur’an, Zakaria warned him that the Qur’an had the power to turn anyone
who defiled it into a dog or a snake. An argument ensued, prompting
Emmanuel to disprove Zakaria’s claim by urinating on his Qur’an. Naturally
Zakaria’s parents wanted to know what had happened to his Qur’an. As word
spread through the Mbagala Ward of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city,
tensions soared. To appease the mobs police arrested Emmanuel, taking him
to the police station for questioning and keeping him there for his own
safety. After Friday prayers on 12 October masses of enraged Muslims
besieged the police station, demanding Emmanuel be handed over to them so
they could behead him. When the police refused, the Muslims rioted,
setting fire to Mbagala’s Agape Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church
of Tanzania. Over the next few days more churches, including an Anglican
and a Church of Christ, were attacked: two in Kigoma and one in Zanzibar.
Cars were also smashed and burnt. Subsequently, 86 were arrested for
rioting and 32 for destroying church properties. Sheikh Ponda Issa Ponda,
the secretary-general of the Council of Islamic Organisations, was
arrested for inciting the violence which he blamed on the police, saying
that if the police had given the matter ‘its due weight’ then Muslims
would not have felt so ‘sidelined’.

But is it a crime in Tanzania to blaspheme, defile a Qur’an or hurt a
Muslim’s feelings? I (EK) don’t think so! Yet on 23 July 2012 a judge in
the coastal town of Bagamoyo sentenced Christian teen Eva Abdullah (17) to
two years in prison after Islamic fundamentalists falsely accused her of
defiling the Qur’an. Eva, who was driven from her home after converting to
Christianity, had been resisting pressure from Islamic fundamentalists to
return to Islam. After falsely accusing her, these radicals allegedly
bribed the judge to punish Eva. Fear of the Muslims reportedly has kept
local Christians from getting involved. Eva thanks the Lord that he has
provided her with kind and sympathetic prison guards who are caring for
her and protecting her.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT GOD WILL –

* convict, motivate and embolden Tanzanian leaders, so they will rise to
defend human rights, liberty and rule of law rather than appease the
belligerent for false peace and short-term gain; may they clearly
understand what is at stake.

* bring revival to the Tanzanian Church, so she might ‘wake up, and
strengthen what remains’ (Revelation 3:2), and take the
life-transforming gospel of grace to Muslims before Muslims impose
repressive Islam on Tanzania.

* comfort and protect Emmanuel Mwinuka (13) and his family as they face
mass Islamic wrath over a childish prank, as well as Eva Abdullah (17)
as she suffers purely because of her love for the Lord Jesus; may God
supply their every need.

CHRISTIANS IN TANZANIA THREATENED BY ISLAMISATION

Tanzania’s population is 31 percent Muslim and 54 percent Christian,
although only about eight percent attend church. Fundamentalist Islam has
advanced as preachers from Sudan and Saudi Arabia spread their radical
creed. Muslims are becoming more assertive with their political demands
and in their attacks. On 10 October reports spread in Dar es Salaam that a
13-year-old Christian boy had desecrated a Qur’an. To appease the mobs,
police arrested the boy. After Friday prayers on 12 October Muslims
besieged the police station, calling for the boy to be handed over for
beheading. When the police refused, the Muslims rioted, burning five
churches. In July Eva Abdullah (17), a convert from Islam, was jailed for
two years after Islamic fundamentalists falsely accused her of desecrating
a Qur’an. Please pray for Tanzania.

MARRIAGE THE BEST ANTIDOTE TO CHILD POVERTY

Marriage remains the strongest anti-poverty weapon, yet it continues to decline. A new report verifies that marriage is the key to family and attempts to circumvent or replace it are failing. The principle cause of child poverty is the absence of married fathers in the home. Marriage remains America’s strongest anti-poverty weapon, yet continues to decline. As husbands disappear from the home, poverty and welfare dependence increases, and children suffer as a result. Marital decline drives up child poverty and welfare dependence, and the poor aspire to healthy marriage but lack the understanding, and skills to achieve it, so it is reasonable for government to take steps to strengthen marriage.

Government should assist people form and maintain healthy marriages and delay childbearing until they are married and economically stable. Clarifying the shortcomings of the “child first, marriage later” philosophy in lower-income communities should be a priority. Many lower-income women who have a child out of wedlock do not feel it is important to be married before having children. Roughly 50% of non-married mothers were cohabiting with the father at the time of birth, but these relationships are usually of short duration and unstable. Commitment is often lacking, and although the couples may think and speak favourably about marriage, most tend to drift apart after the child is born.

Low-income non-married parents are not hostile to marriage. Most highly esteem marriage and have traditional family goals; they hope to have a husband, children, a car, and a house in the suburbs. Few however have a life plan that will enable them to realize their goals. A major obstacle is that most low-income women plan to marry after having children, not before. Their life plan is the exact opposite of the normal, where a man and woman become attracted to each other; a relationship develops and at some point deliberately choose to become lifetime partners; emotional bonds deepen; they marry and after a few years have children.

For those in low income communities, this traditional sequence of family formation and childbearing is now explicitly reversed. Women first have children and then seek to find a stable relationship that will eventually lead to marriage. Most low-income single mothers do not see marriage as an important part of childrearing nor as an important element of financial security. Instead, marriage is seen as a symbolic event that should occur later in life as a celebration of one’s eventual arrival in the middle class. Low-income single mothers “believe that marriage, not children, is what requires the years of careful planning and preparation and that childbearing is something that happens along the way.”

While conceiving a child with a man you have known only a few months is not a problem, most non-married mothers believe they should get to know a man steadily for four or five years before marrying him. The idea that you should carefully select a suitable partner and diligently build a successful relationship with him before conceiving a child is a foreign concept. In many communities, the pattern of children first and (hopefully) marriage later is so entrenched that couples have difficulty understanding an alternative; but as a means for building long-term loving relationships and nurturing homes for children, this pattern is a disaster.

Sadly, their choice to have children before marriage and before forming a stable committed relationship with the child’s father usually leads to   lives of poverty and struggle. The strong desire to have children coupled with the belief that it is not important to be married before having them explains the dramatic rise in out-of-wedlock childbearing in lower-income communities. Non-marital pregnancies are not deliberately planned, but also not seriously avoided. Children are usually born into unstable, uncommitted relationships that fall apart a few years after the children are born. Marriage needs to be encouraged and strengthened not ignored or undermined.

MUSLIM CLERIC TEARS BIBLE AT CAIRO PROTEST

During a demonstration which was held in front of the American Embassy in Cairo recently, a Muslim cleric named Abu Islam tore and burned the Holy Bible in front of thousands of Muslims. His action was met with applause and anti-Christian cheers from the demonstrators. According to Mary Abdelmassih in a story carried by the Assyrian International News Agency, the cleric, before leaving the demonstration and getting into his car, told the crowds “next time I will urinate on it.”   Abdelmassih went on to report that Dr. Mustafa Maraghy, professor of law and Islamic law at Cairo University, filed a complaint with the Attorney General against the cleric, whose real name is Ahmed Abdullah.

The complaint cited Abdullah, who is the owner of the TV channel the Islamic Nation, for contempt of religion, disturbing public security and peace. Dr Maraghy, who is the chairman of the Coptic Coalition, said that tearing and burning the Holy Bible, which all Christians in the world believe in, is a “villainous and barbaric act.” He added that it is not permitted at all to defame religions. “The same hurt feelings we felt by the film which insulted the prophet is the same that we felt by this criminal act,” he said. He vowed that the Coptic Coalition will not ignore such “ignorant people” but will prosecute them.

The Maspero Coptic Youth Union has called on President Morsy to intervene immediately to put an end to any efforts which would kindle the fire of sedition between Muslims and Copts. Another complaint was also filed against Abu Islam by Karam Gabriel, lawyer with the Copts of Egypt Coalition, for his recent burning of the Holy Bible as well as his previous insults to Christianity through his books and through his Islamic Nation TV Channel. Abdelmassih then stated that the Coalition, which has among its members Muslims and Copts, has issued an official statement condemning the film insulting the Prophet of Islam.

Magdy Saber, a spokesman for the Union, condemned Abu Islam’s tearing of the Bible in front of the Copts who were present in front of the US Embassy, where they had gone in support of their Muslim brothers regarding the prophet’s film. Saber demanded officials to take necessary measures to prevent sedition among the Egyptians. “If we condemn the film-makers of the prophet film who live outside Egypt,” he said, “we should also condemn this disgraceful act in Egypt, stressing the need to punish Abu Islam for his irresponsible actions.” Abu Islam said “I tore it apart and threw it to the demonstrators to step on it with their shoes. Next time I will make my grandson urinate on it.”

Commenting on the fact that the film producers did not represent all Copts or the mass of the American people, Abu Islam said “if one does something, everyone bears the guilt and bears the outcome. Did not all Muslims bear the pain of what Osama bin Laden did? Did not all Muslims bear the pain of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman being described as a terrorist? Let them taste from the cup the Islamic world had to drink.” Coptic activist Mark Ebeid said, “Until now we have not heard any condemnation from any Muslim organization, as our church did in condemning the Prophet film.”

FRANCE SET TO BAN WORDS MOTHER AND FATHER FROM OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS

France is set to ban the words “mother” and “father” from all official documents under controversial plans to legalise homosexual marriage. The move, which has outraged Catholics, means only the word “parents” would be used in identical marriage ceremonies for all heterosexual and same-sex couples. The draft law states that “marriage is a union of two people, of different or the same gender”.   It says all references to “mothers and fathers” in the civil code  ¢â‚¬“ which enshrines French law  ¢â‚¬“ will be swapped for simply “parents”. The law would also give equal adoption rights to homosexual and heterosexual couples.

Justice Minister Christiane Taubira told France’s Catholic newspaper La Croix: “Who is to say that a heterosexual couple will bring a child up better than a homosexual couple, that they will guarantee the best conditions for the child’s development?   What is certain is that the interest of the child is a major preoccupation for the government.” The head of the French Catholic Church Cardinal Philippe Barbarin warned followers   that same sex marriage could lead to legalised incest and polygamy in society. He told the Christian RFC radio station: “Same sex marriage would herald a complete breakdown in society with innumerable consequences. ¢â‚¬

Leading French Catholics have also published a ‘Prayer for France’, which says: “Children should not be subjected to adults’ desires and conflicts, so they can fully benefit from the love of their mother and father.”   Pope Benedict recently invited 30 French bishops to Italy to urge them to fight against the new law. He told them: “We have there a true challenge to take on. “The family that is the foundation of social life is threatened in many places, following a concept of human nature that has proven defective.” New President Francois Hollande pledged in his election manifesto to legalise same sex marriage. The draft law will be presented to his cabinet for approval on October 31.

PRO HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE POLITICIANS DEFEATED IN NEW YORK ELECTIONS/VOTER BACKLASH BEGINS

Roy McDonald and Shirley Huntley, two incumbent state senators who voted to redefine marriage in New York, have been soundly defeated. What ¢â‚¬â„¢s more, Neil DiCarlo, a National Organization for Marriage (NOM) backed challenger to Stephen Saland, was locked in a razor-close battle and expects to defeat the incumbent when final absentee votes are counted. “Marriage was redefined in New York because of six turncoat senators, and we vowed we would not rest until they were removed from office,” says Brian Brown, NOM’s president. “We’ve now taken out four of the six who betrayed marriage, and we’re going to finish the job with the remaining two.”

Sen. James Alesi was driven from his re-election race by NOM’s pledge to defeat him. Sen. Carl Kruger was forced to resign, and NOM helped elect pro-marriage Republican David Storobin to replace him. McDonald was defeated in the Republican primary by pro-marriage candidate Kathy Marchione. NOM was a major supporter of Marchione, sending two district-wide mailers and launching thousands of telephone calls. And Huntley was defeated in the Democratic primary by pro-marriage candidate James Sanders. NOM also sent two mailers and thousands of telephone calls opposing Huntley.

“When marriage was redefined, Andrew Cuomo and his billionaire friends like Paul Singer and Michael Bloomberg said they’d protect anyone who voted against marriage from political harm. Now look at the political carnage they have wrought,” says Brown. “The people of New York have sent a clear and unequivocal message ¢â‚¬”they will not tolerate politicians, Democrat or Republican, who redefine marriage. It’s laughable when groups like the Human Rights Campaign say that nobody has ever lost a race for supporting same-sex marriage. The landscape is littered with the failed political careers of such politicians, including now these four (soon to be six) incumbents in New York.”

CHURCH MEMBERS URGED TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT SEXUAL ABUSE

Sharon Daugherty, pastor of a Tulsa, Oklahoma megachurch that has been rocked by allegations of teen rape, is urging her congregation to speak out about incidents of sexual abuse in their midst. Five employees allegedly waited two weeks to report a 13-year-old girl ¢â‚¬â„¢s rape claim and were arrested, along with the girl ¢â‚¬â„¢s suspected attacker. “I want to personally say, that if anybody here is aware of any child being neglected or abused, physically or sexually, that you should please inform the authorities immediately,” Daugherty told the congregation during Saturday services. “Our children are precious, and we owe them our full protection.”

Police report that Daugherty, pastor of the 17,000-member church and global ministry whose messages reach more than 200 countries via satellite television, also knew about the abuse. She thought employees, which included her son and daughter-in-law, were reporting the incidents. Daugherty has not been charged with any crime. “I was briefly told of an incident involving two … employees and members of 24/7 (a youth group) … and was told it was being reported but did not receive any details on the specific allegations,” Daugherty said. “I was extremely disappointed to later hear of the delay in the time it was first reported.”

A then Church employee allegedly raped the girl at the church. He was fired and the police were notified. He was charged with several felonies, including first-degree rape, forcible sodomy, lewd molestation and use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime. A former Church employee meanwhile is facing felony charges for allegedly making a lewd or indecent proposal to a child and using a computer to facilitate a sex crime. He turned himself into Police last week.  ¢â‚¬Å“Prior to their hiring, both men had passed a screening process that included personal references and a nationwide background check. No history of any criminal activity was found, ¢â‚¬  the church said in a statement.

LEADING HOMOSEXUAL ADMITS HE WOULD PREFER TO BE BROUGHT UP BY A MUM AND A DAD

Rupert Everett was once a trailblazer for gay actors after he came out as a homosexual 20 years ago. Everett has now stunned the homosexual community by declaring that he “couldn ¢â‚¬â„¢t think of anything worse” than having two homosexual parents. Everett said that although his mother Sara had met his boyfriend, she “still wishes I had a wife and kids. She thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her,” he said.   “I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two dads.” Ben Summerskill, from the homosexual rights group Stonewall said, “There is no evidence that the kids of homosexual parents suffer in how they are brought up or in how they develop.”

Everett’s mother said she wished her son was not a homosexual. She said, “I’d like him to have children. He’s so good with children. He’d make a wonderful father. But I also think a child needs a mummy and a daddy.   I’ve told him that and he takes it very well,” she added. Everett said in 2009 that he wished he hadn’t come out because it had hurt his career. Everett said. “It just doesn’t work and you’re going to hit a brick wall at some point. You’re going to manage to make it work for a certain amount of time, but at the first sign of failure they’ll cut you right off.” During his career Everett has starred in Shakespeare in Love, My Best Friend’s Wedding and The Next Best Thing.

JESUS DRAMATICALLY CHANGES LIFE OF VILLAGE PRIEST

Najeev Chakmawasa was a respected priest in his local village. People came to him with all kinds of problems. They paid him money to conduct ritual prayers to heal their sicknesses, help them financially or promote family harmony. Yet underneath the religious fa ƒ §ade, Najeev was a fraud who was addicted to alcohol and drugs. But Najeev did not know what to do. All he had ever done was serve at the temple which he had dropped out of school to do. But then he had an encounter with a Gospel for Asia film team. A pastor of a local church had invited the film team to show their movies about the life of Christ. The pastor had become good friends with Najeev, so naturally he invited him to see the movie.

While Najeev was watching the movie, he began to realize Jesus is alive and offers true forgiveness. He had never heard of a God who is able to do all this. Najeev chose to receive Jesus as his Saviour that very day. He no longer works in the temple. Najeev also quit drinking alcohol and taking drugs. This former village priest is now a member of the local Christian church. His legacy of faith is lasting long after the film team has gone on to another village. Najeev’s Pastor friend is praying that this former priest’s family will come to know Jesus in the same way that Najeev does and that Najeev will stand firm in his new found faith.

ECONOMIC CRISIS LEAVES MIDDLE CLASS HOMELESS IN SPAIN

In Terrassa, near Barcelona, squatters are occupying an empty, new apartment building.   They have nowhere else to live, so they live there, illegally. One of the squatters, a father of two young children, said it’s their only choice. “There are lots of people kicking the doors of unoccupied buildings down because they don’t have another option,”   Guillem Domingo, who heads a group called Platform of People Affected by Mortgages, said “squatters in the building are unemployed, having recently lost their jobs due to the economic crisis affecting Europe. “You can’t just live on the street,” she said. “There are so many empty buildings that will never have occupants, whether through selling or renting.”

Spain is not Greece — yet. It is the fourth largest economy in Europe. But like Greece, Spain’s middle class is falling into its own economic abyss. The virtue of home ownership was pushed by the Spanish government and until recently stood at 80%, the highest in Western Europe. The bottom began to fall out of the real estate market in 2007, with official figures showing the value of homes falling 25% in the last five years. But observers say it’s worse than that with the depression in Spain pushing everything over the edge. “Spain, not only the banking sector but also the government sector, is about to go into bankruptcy,” economist Juan Ramon Rallo, at King Juan Carlos University in Madrid, said.

Much of the media portrays Spain’s crisis as only a banking crisis from the collapse of a real estate bubble. There are 2 million unsold new housing units. The number of bad loans has reached an 18-year high, with one collection agency sending out debt collectors dressed as monks to try to appeal to the consciences of the debtors in this historically Catholic nation. But Spain’s problems are much deeper than a banking crisis. Unemployment is almost 25%, with an astonishing jobless figure for adults under 25 of 53%. The economy has shrunk for the third straight quarter and vital capital is fleeing the country. With one in four unemployed, more and more families are losing their homes.

Some groups, like Platform of People Affected by Mortgages, are trying to prevent evictions and force banks to allow the homeless to live in unsold housing. Many Spaniards have signed mortgages they must pay off, even after they’ve lost their home to foreclosure. Spanish banks are reportedly unloading repossessed properties for 60% of the original mortgage, and the first homeowner then owes the difference. In June, Spain’s Parliament rejected a law that would have allowed about 300,000 homeowners who have had their homes repossessed to be free of their debt. The banking industry warned this would collapse the financial system. They were probably correct.

One economist said much of Spain’s suffering could have been prevented if the Spanish government had not gone on a spending binge during the boom years. “If we hadn’t increased spending between 2001 and 2007, we would not have a deficit now, even with the banking crisis and high unemployment,” he said. During the good years, the Spanish government spent $15 billion annually on a disastrous “green Jobs” program that managed to increase unemployment by raising the cost of energy. Now Spanish families are paying. Please pray that the Catholic and Orthodox Churches in Spain and Greece will rise in Spirit inspired renewal to meet the spiritual and economic needs of their people.

CHRISTIANS AND MISSIONARIES IN MUSLIM COUNTRIES FACE HEIGHTENED VULNERABILITY

The well-organized attacks on over 21 U.S. and German embassies during the recent worldwide protests against the video depicting the prophet Mohammad, was a “world changing” event for Christians, churches, and missionaries around the globe. This is the view of Mary Marr, President of The Christian Emergency Network (CEN) who said “These events beg the question: If the U.S. cannot or will not defend embassies, what will be defended? What does this mean for Christians, churches and missionaries around the globe? “Missionaries have long lived with an eternal perspective in that each day their lives may be at risk in many countries where they minister.

Those with U.S. citizenship may have long relied upon the belief the U.S. embassies were bastions of security, while traveling or residing in another country. “However, the recent events are putting that assumption into question. As responsible caring Believers, we must examine the consequences for Christians and missionaries living or traveling abroad in the future” Marr went on to say, “This cauldron has been simmering for a very long time. Anyone can readily see this level of highly organized outrage was not simply because of one movie as anything may have triggered the outrage in countries angered with the U.S. for one reason or another.

These were highly orchestrated protests with security consequences for all Christians and missionaries. “Historically in times of battle when a fort is taken a flag is raised as a symbol of victory.   Recently the U.S. flag in many countries was replaced by a black Islamist flag during recent protests.” When Francis Key was awaiting word on a British or U.S. victory, he began writing what was to become the American National Anthem with the words, ‘And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. . . ‘   It was a symbol of victory and an inspiration for a new nation standing for freedom, including a nation built upon religious freedom for all faiths.”

Marr said that CEN was founded to “help the Body of Christ respond more biblically and intentionally to national emergencies.” She said, “Erecting the Islamist flag over western embassies makes the statement that the Islamist flag has replaced the sovereignty of that country and it is no longer a place of security and defence for the citizens of that country who reside there. “The taking down of the flag of an embassy of a sovereign nation and replacing it with a religious flag should not be minimized as bold consequences may follow as a result. Indeed during the protests the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a rare security bulletin putting faith-based organizations on alert.

Marr continued “Rather than retreating in denial or avoidance as we have been prone to do, the situation before us means a vital question must be answered.” When asked what Christians, churches, Christian ministries and missionary organizations specifically should do right away regarding to their own global security from a Biblical perspective, Marr replied, “First, they should not minimize the consequences of the security risks of their Christians missionaries in countries around the globe. Prayerful and intentional decisions need to be made by the missionary organizations, apart from their traditional decision-making processes, since these are unprecedented times.”

VICTORY FOR NURSES WHO WONT ASSIST IN ABORTIONS

The American Centre for Law and Justice (ACLJ) has helped prevent a group of pro-life nurses at a West Coast hospital from being penalized for not assisting in abortions. A spokesman for ACLI said “Imagine you are a nurse. Imagine you have undergone extensive education and training and have chosen to specialize in assisting labouring women to safely deliver their babies. Now imagine that you arrive at work one day only to be informed that if you are not willing to participate in procedures that end the lives of those babies, you will no longer be permitted to work in your chosen field of labour and delivery. The group of nurses who contacted ACLI didn’t have to imagine this scenario – they lived it.

When these nurses contacted ACLI, their hospital’s Labour & Delivery Unit had recently been placed under the direction of a staunchly pro-abortion doctor, and they were facing the choice of either agreeing to participate in abortions against their moral and religious objections or being permanently transferred out of Labour & Delivery. Prior to then the nurses and their non-objecting colleagues had always worked together and managed the schedule in a way that ensured all patients received proper care, without the objecting nurses having to assist with abortions. No, the hospital was insistent: its Labour & Delivery Unit was no place for nurses who believe in the sanctity of human life.

If the hospital had its way, pregnant prolife patients would no longer have access to health care personnel who shared their values. Because the nurses were given just a few weeks to make their decision, we contacted the hospital to inform it that its new policy of discrimination was in direct violation of state and federal laws protecting these nurses’ rights of conscience. We made clear our intention to file a lawsuit if necessary, and enlist the help of several members of Congress. Rather than correct the problem, for the last several months the hospital has repeatedly tried to find a way to remove these nurses from Labour & Delivery yet avoid the consequences of its discrimination.

Most recently it implemented a scheduling policy that effectively penalized the objecting nurses by requiring them to rotate to a different hospital unit, while rewarding non-objecting nurses by removing them from this rotation and allowing them to work solely in Labour & Delivery. The hospital’s blatant disregard for the nurses’ rights left us with no choice but to prepare to take formal legal action. We are pleased to report, however, that the hospital had a change of heart and has agreed to return to its previous scheduling policy. Those Labour & Delivery nurses who refused to participate in the culture of death, will now be able to continue to do what they love – and were actually trained for.

HOW A DROPPED WRISTBAND SAVED A BABY’S LIFE

Rachel remembers being excited as she purchased a red Bound4LIFE bracelet with the word LIFE engraved on it. But one day, whilst loading groceries into her car in the parking lot at Walmart, the LIFE Band slipped off her wrist without her knowing. “I looked everywhere for it” said Rachel. “I finally decided that it must have slipped off while I was carrying the groceries to the car.” Rachel prayed that “somebody who needs it will find it.” Not many months later, Rachel began a job as a server in a local restaurant. One day a mother and her newborn baby came in and were seated in her section. Rachel greeted the woman at the table. “She seemed a bit shy, but she smiled as I greeted her.”

Rachel served her a drink, took her order, and made small talk about how beautiful the woman’s baby was as she slept in her baby seat. As Rachel talked to the woman, she caught a glimpse of a red bracelet on the woman’s wrist with the distinctive word LIFE engraved on it. “You have a LIFE Band?” Rachel asked. The woman was at first confused about what Rachel was referring to, but then clued in. “Yes I found this in a parking lot,” the woman replied. The woman recounted that a few months previous she was dismayed to find herself unexpectedly pregnant. She had gone out shopping to distract herself because she had just made an appointment to get an abortion and was terrified about it.

The appointment was two days away. As the woman walked from her car into Walmart, a red bracelet lying on the ground caught her eye. She picked it up and saw that it had the word LIFE on it. She quickly put the bracelet in her purse and continued shopping. That night the woman sat in her room crying, filled with dread about what she was about to do. She was worried about what her parents would think and felt the need to “get rid of the problem.” Her boyfriend had abandoned her, making abortion seem like the only choice that was left. The woman recounted how she suddenly remembered the bracelet in her purse. She pulled it out and held it in her fingers until she drifted off to sleep.

She suddenly awoke in the middle of the night with the word “LIFE” surging through her mind. In the morning, the woman cancelled her abortion appointment. “I was stunned,” Rachel said. “All I could do was cry. This beautiful baby girl next to us was her almost aborted baby.” Through sobs and sniffles, Rachel told the woman how she had lost a LIFE Band in the very same parking lot, not many months before. “I told her what the word LIFE on the band actually meant.” Now both women had tears of joy and gratitude streaming down their faces. Through her sobs, the woman managed to whisper to Rachel: “Thank you. If you hadn’t lost this bracelet, I wouldn’t have my beautiful baby next to me.”

MATERNAL CARE EXPERTS SAY ABORTION NEVER MEDICALLY NECESSARY

An international group of 140 obstetricians and physicians meeting in Dublin recently issued a statement denying that abortion is ever “medically necessary” for women.   The declaration said “As experienced practitioners and researchers in obstetrics and gynaecology, we affirm that direct abortion is not medically necessary to save the life of a woman.   There is a fundamental difference between abortion and necessary medical treatments that are carried out to save the life of the mother, even if such treatment results in the loss of life of her unborn child. “We confirm that the prohibition of abortion does not affect, in any way, the availability of optimal care to pregnant women.”

The symposium was organised by the Committee for Excellence in Maternal Healthcare. They released the statement along with new papers on maternal health issues including high-risk pregnancies, cancer treatment during pregnancy, foetal anomalies, mental health and maternal mortality. The symposium was designed to provide clarity and confirmation to doctors and legislators at a crucial moment, as legislators are wrestling with demands by the Labour party and abortion lobbyists to abolish the country’s constitutional protection for the unborn.

Over the last two years, lobbyists have worked hard to convince the Irish public that Ireland’s law banning all abortion is a “threat to women’s health”. A ruling in 2010 by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)   is being used as a pretext by the Labour Party to push forward plans to legalise abortion. But the ECHR ruling did not say that Ireland was obligated to change its laws. Dr. Eoghan de Faoite, a physician who attended the symposium said that abortion is being promoted under a “false pretence” that it is medically necessary. The problem stems from one of the women who brought the complaint to the ECHR who, he said, “didn’t get correct treatment from her family doctor”.

This case is being used to make the claim that pregnant women need access to abortion as part of their health care. The public he said, “needed to hear from the experts that it is safe to deliver chemotherapy to a pregnant women and her unborn child.” Ireland’s parliament is waiting on a panel of government-appointed experts examining the ECHR ruling to recommend how to proceed. But the government is not allowing any submissions from the public or from medical experts. Dr de Faoite said “We are seeking to ensure that the real experts can be heard.” The abortion lobby he said is “frightening women into believing they are being deprived of good care because of the ban on abortion.”

LOVE CAN STAND THE TEST OF TIME

Science Report researchers have analysed data from surveys of more than 6,000 people and found that “a surprisingly high number of them were still very much in love with their long-term spouse, though the researchers drew a distinction between romantic love, which can endure, and passionate or obsessive love, which often fades after the beginning of a relationship.” The study’s author was quoted as saying the new findings could help inspire couples to strive for better relationships, rather than resigning themselves to the inevitability of falling out of love.” Being in the mindset that long-term romance is probably not something to shoot for might be discouraging to some people,” she said.

“They might think, ‘This is probably as good as it gets.’ I think it’s important for people to at least know that it could be attainable.” The secret is that “these people are often very relationship focused. Their relationship is something that is very central to their lives, something they spend time on, work on, really care about. They seem to resolve conflicts relatively efficiently and smoothly.”   While most of us already knew good relationships take hard work and that it IS possible to be deeply in love with our spouse 20, 30, 40-years into our marriage, we now have science “coming on board” so to speak to confirm that.

Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin | RLPB 180 | Wed 10 Oct 2012———————————————————
PHILIPPINES: RELIGIOUS LIBERTY IN BANGSAMORO
plus UPDATES on Iran and Saudi Arabia
———————————————————by Elizabeth KendalOn Sunday 7 October the Government of the Republic of the Philippines
(GRP) agreed to a ‘framework agreement’ with the Moro Islamic Liberation
Front (MILF). This framework is not a ‘peace deal’ inasmuch as it is an
agreed commencement from which the two parties will work towards a
comprehensive peace. The agreement will be officially signed on 15
October. As President Benigno Aquino III said, ‘The work does not end
here. There are still details that both sides must hammer out.   Promises
must be kept, institutions must be fixed, and new capacities must be built
nationally and regionally in order to effectively administer the
Bangsamoro.’ ‘Bangsamoro’ is the name of the new entity that will replace
the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).The Philippines Government created the ARMM in 1989 while it was engaged
in a struggle with the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). When the
MNLF put down their weapons in 1996, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
(MILF) – hardline Islamists who had split from the MNLF to pursue an
independent Islamic state – rejected peace, rejected the ARMM and fought
on. Until now, the closest the GRP and the MILF have ever been to peace
was the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) of July 2008.

The MOA-AD would have replaced the ARMM with a greatly expanded MILF-ruled  Bangsamoro Judicial Entity. After learning that they would soon be living
in an Islamic sub-state, local Christians petitioned the Supreme Court
which ruled the MOA-AD unconstitutional, scuttling the deal. MILF
responded with a wave of violence against Mindanao Christians that left
400 dead and some 750,000 displaced. In her quest to add ‘peace-maker’ to
her legacy, President Arroyo and those who supported the MOA-AD had shown
little concern for thousands of Christians who did not want to wake up one
morning in an Islamic ‘Judicial Entity’ under MILF rule. The new ‘framework agreement’ is different in that MILF does not make the
same territorial demands. Associated Press reports: ‘A new autonomous
region will take shape in the south, with Moro rebels giving up their
quest for independence in exchange for broad powers to govern themselves.’
However, as AP adds, while ‘Bangsamoro’ is ‘broadly based on an existing
autonomous region, the rebels want it expanded’. Furthermore, the MILF
will not be governing ‘themselves’ but everyone who lives within
Bangsamoro, Christians included. According to the ‘framework agreement’,
Sharia Courts will be strengthened and their jurisdiction expanded,
although (it is assured) Sharia will be applied only to Muslims. So will
Muslim citizens of Bangasmoro be free to appeal to the Supreme Court for
their constitutional rights or will the Islamic Courts have jurisdiction
over all matters pertaining to Islam? In every state where two systems of law operate, Muslims routinely find
their constitutional rights rendered illusory by Islamic courts that
retain jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to Islam. These include
whom Muslims can marry, what Muslims can drink, how Muslims must dress,
with whom Muslims can mix and suchlike. Would Bangsamoro Muslims be free
to leave Islam – a right guaranteed them in the Philippines Constitution –
or would leaving Islam fall under the jurisdiction of the Sharia Court, as
it does in Malaysia which is mediating the talks? Concerning religious
freedom, the ‘framework agreement’ states that all citizens are guaranteed
the right to ‘freedom and expression of religion and belief’; the right to
‘freedom of speech’; and the right to ‘freedom from religious, ethnic and
sectarian harassment’. As harassment is not defined, this ‘right’ will
doubtless function as the basis for laws that will stifle Christian
witness. As per the ‘framework agreement’ a 15-member ‘Transition Commission’
(TransCom) will be created to flesh out the details, propose changes to
the constitution as required and then draft a law creating the new Muslim
autonomous region. The process is expected to take at least two years. In
the meantime the MNLF, believing it has been betrayed, is threatening to
sue and is ‘warning’ of unrest. Along with this, the Bangsamoro Islamic
Freedom Fighters has split from MILF vowing to continue the jihad.[Watch Religious Liberty Monitoring for updates.]

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY THAT GOD WILL –

* expose deceptions and deny the devil a foothold in the transition
process, so that peace does not come at the expense of religious
liberty and security.

* use this opportunity to make Muslims aware of the great value of
liberty, a human right which frees them up to seek truth and follow
their conscience – something they will be deprived of if they are
placed under Sharia Law.

* sustain, preserve, protect, bless and build his Church in the Southern
Philippines. ‘The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul
who seeks him.’ (Lamentations 3:25 ESV)

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY IN BANGSAMORO, PHILIPPINES

On Sunday 7 October the Government of the Republic of the Philippines
signed a ‘framework agreement’ with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
(MILF). A 15-member Transition Commission will be established to flesh out
the details. It will work towards a comprehensive peace deal and the
creation of an Islamic sub-state, to be known as Bangsamoro. It is
essentially in the area already known as the Autonomous Region of Muslim
Mindanao (ARMM). Sharia Courts will be strengthened and their jurisdiction
expanded, seriously curtailing the human rights and religious freedom of
both Muslims and Christians. The transition is expected to take several
years. Unrest is highly probable. Pray that religious freedom is not
traded for a tenuous peace with committed Islamists. Please pray for the
Church in Southern Philippines.

UPDATES

* IRAN: INJUSTICE AND REPRESSION PREVAIL

Iranian authorities have released Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani but they did
not release his heroic Muslim lawyer. Rather, on 29 September, Mohammed
Ali Dadkhah was transferred to Ward 350 of Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison
to commence a nine-year sentence. Dadkhah is charged with ‘aiding and
abetting’ the enemy, spreading propaganda and threatening national
security. (Dadkhah provided pro bono legal representation to persecuted
religious minorities.) Dadkhah advocated for Nadarkhani. Now we must
advocate for him with prayer to the highest authority.

* SAUDI ARABIA: APOSTASY TRIAL ON 14 OCTOBER

Maryam (28), a Saudi convert to Christianity, remains in hiding in Sweden.
Her Christian boss, Lebanese expatriate Henna Sarkees (50), along with his
Saudi ‘accomplice’, will face court in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday
14 October. Sarkees is charged with abusing his position of authority to
coerce Maryam into converting to Christianity. His Saudi ‘accomplice’ is
charged with facilitating her flight out of the country. Pray for Henna
Sarkees and his Saudi associate. Pray also for Maryam. Pray for awakening
in Saudi Arabia. (Ephesians 3:20,21)

ISLAMISTS THREATEN GERMANY

Germany has seen its share of radical ideologies over the years. Now the nation faces a new threat: Salafism. It’s an extreme brand of Islam that preaches hatred of Christians and Jews. Salafism is growing in Germany. In June, 1,000 police targeted the homes, schools, and mosques of Salafi Muslims. Salafis adhere strictly to Islamic sharia law. Their ideology encourages violent jihad and is shared by al Qaeda and many other Islamic terror groups. It’s now taking hold among a small but growing number of Germany’s 4.3 million Muslims. “We have a really dynamic growing Salafiscene,” German journalist Franz Feyder said. “Some of the security officers tell us that we have about 5,000 Salafis in Germany.”

Feyder said “The Salafist movement in Germany is creating an environment for violence and radicalization. Not every Salafist is a terrorist, but every terrorist is a Salafist.” Numerous Salafists have been arrested in Germanyon terrorism related charges since 9/11. Still more have left Germany to wage jihad abroad. “We can see that a lot of jihadis with Salafist backgrounds are going to Afghanistan and to training camps in Pakistan,”Feyder said. “And what we can see as well is that a lot of jihadis are passing through the Horn of Africa,” he continued. “They are going to fight in Somalia, going to fight in Yemen, going to fight in Kenya.”

Sheikh Abu Adam runs the Darul Quran Mosque in Munich. He dislikes the term Salafi and said he’s simply a Muslim. German authorities believe he’s much more than that. They’ve visited his mosque to investigate. In an exclusive interview in his Munich apartment, the sheikh showed CBN News government documents that he said identify him as a radical Salafi and anti-Semite. He denies the charges and said he’s worked with the German government to fight extremism. “Why are they saying that about your mosque?” CBN News asked Adam. “I don’t know,” he replied. All of my students, all – I don’t have anyexception – are fighting against terrorism and they are very integrated in the society.

The Egyptian native said he travels to Pakistan and other hotspots to preach against terrorism and debate jihadists. He’s been targeted with death threats and his bodyguards were present for our interview. “I try to convince them to leave jihad, to leave radicalism, to leave bomb attacks,” he told CBN News. Although the sheikh, his 10 children, and three wives receive welfare benefits, he told CBN News he wants to leave Germany. “So you no longer have any communication with the German government?” CBN News asked. “I’m sacrificing myself and my family and my scholars. I’m fighting against the terrorists,” Adam replied.

Yet the sheikh has engaged in violence of his own. In 2010, he made international headlines when he was accused of brutally beating one of his wives, breaking her nose and shoulder. He reportedly yelled Koranic verses during the attack and refused to let police enter the apartment. The wife would not press charges. Also last year, a German television crew filmed Adam presiding over sharia courts in his mosque that operate outside of German law. “The Salafi people, they tell the truth,” counter-jihad activist Michael Sturzenberger said. “They say, ‘We want to have Sharia law in Germany, we want to have a caliphate.'”

Sturzenberger hopes to rally Germans against this movement. He called a recent drive by a Salafi imam to place a Koran in every German home a much-needed wakeup call. “They want to spread this message all over Germany, and they printed 300,000, and they gave it for nothing,” Sturzenberger told CBN News. “They gave it in every city in Germany to the people, the message of Allah, and they want to Islamise Germany,” he said. Authorities also fear the growing Salafi presence will not only make Germany an even more attractive al Qaeda target, but an exporter of terror as well.

EIGHTY PER CENT OF MISSING PERSONS IN INDIA TRAFFICKED TO BROTHELS

A newly-released report from India reveals that 8 out of 10 missing persons are sold to brothels. Three years ago, human rights watchers said more than 1.2 million children in India were sold into prostitution, and as many as 100 million people in India are involved in trafficking-related activities. That number has only gone up. The most likely victims of human trafficking are those living on less than $1 a day. C.H. Dyer with Bright Hope International notes that, “People in extreme poverty will go to great measure to find security, food, and the basics of life.” He said desperation drove local churches to Bright Hope to ask for help.

They knew there was widespread prostitution and a lot of young girls being forced into prostitution in their community and wanted to know what to do to make a difference?'”   Bright Hope developed a network of churches in India to raise awareness and build strategic partnerships to be part of the solution. The three-pronged approach included awareness, rescue, and rehabilitation. An anti-trafficking program developed that included training for those who were involved in the rescues and rehabilitation programs for the rescued. The program hasn’t been without its challenges. Building trust takes time.

“Getting them out of the brothels, working with local authorities, working with the police to gain their confidence, going into the brothels to pull out the minors and offer the older women the chance to come out was all new to them.” It’s a responsibility they don’t take lightly with so much at stake, says Dyer. “You take your time, you pray, and you get the advice of those who have gone before you.” In fact, the success rate has been encouraging. “The agencies we’re working with have documented lower rates of prostitution in those communities where they have done this with good planning, and that’s what we’re bringing to this: proven solutions and a proven God who changes lives.”

However, a successful rescue means there’s an angry pimp or gang lord. “Certain pastors and leaders that are involved with our team have gotten death threats already and threats of violence against them.” Taking on human trafficking means a church is entering the spiritual fray. Dyer says often, there are drugs or idolatry involved. “It is dangerous. It is the front line against evil. We need to partner with them in prayer specifically, that the power of the Lord would come upon them and protect them and lead them as they do these good works in His name.” Then, there’s the question of whether slave rescues actually perpetuate the cycle of slavery.

In cases where people were rescued from slavery in Ghana, it was found that many of them found their way back in later, or new slaves were taken. Rehabilitation is focused on healing through professional Biblical counselling to regain strength, hope, and faith in God and His ability to restore them. Opportunities to earn a liveable wage must be given. Through job skills training, girls can have well-paying jobs as they rebuild their lives. Dyer explains that “These kinds of programs really can help people rise above their economic and spiritual situation. So we can create a pathway out where others will want to follow.”

WHY MEN ARE DRAWN TO ISLAM AND NOT CHRISTIANITY

A speaker asked a group in upstate New York the following question. “Why do men flock to Islam while avoiding Christianity?” In response one woman blurted out, “If Christianity required women to walk behind their husbands and wear burquas, then we’d have a church full of men.” So is male dominance the key to Islam’s growth? Must a religion oppress women to attract men? I posed these questions to David De Meo, professor of Middle Eastern and Arabic studies at Harvard. I sum up his response this way: Islam is a religion that delivers results for men. Too often, Christianity does not.”Because Islam delivers what fathers and husbands want for their families, strong men gravitate towards it.

The professor believes that Islam’s emphasis on responsibility and accountability is attractive to men. “It imposes clear behavioural demands and holds men to account in areas that society today bemoans a lack of responsibility – alcohol, sex, parenting, etc. I think this explains why the religion is growing so much among populations that are seen as beset by moral crises in these areas -prisoners, lower economic classes, and minorities” Di Meo said.   Professor Di Meo believes Islam’s unbending moral code, its five strict pillars and even its reputation for ferocity are attractive to men at a gut level.   A man thinks, “Here is a faith that’s going to hold me to a higher standard.   Men are dying for this.”

Furthermore, Islam appeals to the kind of man who is repulsed by the soft, accepting and relational faith pushed in many churches today. So the question for Christianity is this: Can our faith “deliver” for men without oppressing women in the process? Here are some ideas:

1. A clear mission for every church. Most church mission statements are rambling and non-specific. Men are drawn to clarity and brevity.   If they’re going to give up their weekend, they want to know why.

2. High moral standards. Men are looking for a church that’s different from the world they see on TV. This is why conservative churches are growing and liberal ones are dying. Few men are drawn to squishy morals. They want a church built on a firm, time-tested bedrock.

3. Men need help and back up enforcing morals at home. Children today are bombarded with immoral messages. Men feel powerless against MTV, South Park and the Internet. Churches should train men how to deal with these situations -how to say no to sin in a loving way.

4. Men need the support of other men. Most churches offer nothing in the way of men’s ministry or small groups. What a tragedy.   Although it’s initially hard to engage men in a small group, once they do get involved, they’re usually hooked. Their faith deepens. Their lives change. We don’t need to put women in burquas to bring men back to church. But we do need to deliver what we promise. Men need to know that Christianity works, at least as well as the alternatives.

HALLOWEEN BECOMING BIG BUSINESS

Not just for kids anymore, Halloween has shifted into a celebration for adults looking for an escape from the everyday, and with this shift, the Halloween industry is booming. “It is an escape from reality for a day,”says Kelly David, spokesperson for Spirit Halloween, the largest seasonal Halloween retailer in the country. “For adults, you can put on a Halloween costume and forget about work, the bad economy, and other pressures.” With the absence of a life in Christ, the human spirit looks for something to fill that void of real companionship, and Halloween is falsely attempting to fill that void for some.

In the past few decades, the Halloween industry has grown. Temporary Halloween stores are on the rise and other retailers have expanded their offerings for the October 31 celebration. Halloween is the second-largest commercial holiday, with Christmas being the first.   According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), 148 million Americans will take part in some sort of Halloween celebration this year. In its 2010 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, the NRF found that Americans will spend $66.28 per person on costumes, candy, and decorations, up from last year’s $56.31 and comparable to the $66.54 spent per person in 2008.

The tourism industry is showing signs that Halloween is morphing into an empire. Cities and towns all over the country host Halloween-related events and activities, some which span weeks. Travel agencies and attractions are even taking the opportunity to offer special Halloween travel packages. Salem, Massachusetts, known for being the location of the Salem Witch Trials in the late 1600s, has used its witchy history to become a popular tourist destination around Halloween. Universal Orlando Parks in Orlando, Florida feature haunted houses and “scare zones” where actors in scary costumes jump out at visitors at any moment.

Please pray:

*   that those who are in search of eternal life will find Jesus in their journey. Pray that there would be no need to find solace in pagan practices. Pray for an increased awareness of the fallacy of pagan practices played out in Halloween. “Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:31).

NEW ZEALAND LAWMAKERS BACK SAME SEX MARRIAGE

InternationalA bill to legalize same sex marriage has passed the first of three readings in the New Zealand parliament by a margin of 80 to 40, creating the likelihood of passage into law early next year.   Both the Prime Minister John Key and the Opposition Labour leader, David Shearer, backed the legislation, and MPs were free to vote according to their conscience, rather than along party lines. Mr Key said he was stunned and excited by the support. “It was an overwhelming result and I think it puts the bill in a pretty strong place to potentially become law, given you’ve had two-thirds of parliament voting for it,” he said. The Labour politician behind the bill, Louisa Wall, had been hoping for 61 votes.

After the vote New Zealand’s Roman Catholic bishops reaffirmed their opposition to redefining marriage. “To propose any alternative definition will have implications in law, and family structure which throughout history has been seen as the fundamental unit in every society,” Archbishop John Dew said. However an Anglican Vicar of a city Parish in Auckland has erected a billboard, portraying the top of a wedding cake with two bride dolls kissing. It states, “We don’t care who’s on top.” Vicar Glynn Cardy said he considered commitment more important than gender. “Such prejudice is contrary to the good news of Jesus,” he said.

But Anglican bishops say they do care “who’s on top.” “The billboard is a confusing message trading on cliches that I don’t think his congregation actually stands for,” Auckland Bishop Jim White said.   Former Presbyterian minister David Clark, currently a Labour Party parliamentarian, spoke in support of the bill.   However AFFIRM, a conservative Presbyterian group, dismissed supportive views of Presbyterians as “isolated voices,” saying same sex marriage was “spiritually offensive” to many Christian people. The bill will now go to a select committee, and will have to pass another two votes before becoming law.

MORE THAN 40 KILLED IN NIGERIAN COLLEGE MASSACRE

At least 40 students have been confirmed dead in a massacre at a college hostel in the Nigerian town of Mubi. Men in military uniform went door-to-door shooting students or cutting their throats with machetes, calling out names from a list, in what is a predominantly Christian neighbourhood. The attackers left bodies in lines outside the hostel, the BBC reports. Some sources said the attackers demanded students recite lines before killing them; others said they were asked to confirm their names from a list. Sources say the final death toll may be more than 50 and are describing it as a ‘religiously motivated attack’ linked to attempts to impose radical Sharia law in northern Nigeria.

Some media reports have linked it to fiercely contested student union elections. Police said the dead included several Muslims and two security guards. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack – though many suspect Islamist militants Boko Haram or sympathisers. Last week 156 suspected members of the group were arrested in Mubi – and a senior leader killed. Police recovered homemade bombs and assault rifles at the college student halls the previous week. One source told Release the attackers impersonated security forces carrying out a further search for arms at the college. Mubi is now under curfew and the college  closed.   Some students have fled the area.

GREECE ON BRINK OF TOTAL FAILURE

At SOS Children’s Villages, social worker Stergios Sifnios hopes their stockpile of food and clothing will help convince a growing number of desperate young mothers that they don’t have to abandon their children. Sifnios said their caseload of needy families has doubled from last year. “There’s no government social services around to support these people,” he explained. Paraskevi Thoma is a mother of three and unemployed. She has to have assistance. “When you have three children and you have no job, you’re forced to seek aid from somewhere,” Thoma said. Some mothers are simply dropping off their children at orphanages because they cannot afford to feed them anymore.

Greece is on the edge of a free fall. The national debt is now larger than the economy, which has shrunk by 20%, and will shrink another 7%   this year. At least 67,000 businesses will go bankrupt in 2012 alone. The unemployment rate has reached 24%. Hunger and shortages are spreading. Some are asking if Greece is already a “failed state.” As one Greek journalist put it, the Greek people are “disillusioned, miserable, exasperated and very frightened.” Many Greeks think their government is useless. “Greece is finished ¢â‚¬ ¦hospitals don’t work, nothing works ¢â‚¬ ¦everything is going bankrupt,” Erasmus, an Athens taxi driver, said. “Greece will have to be rebuilt from the ground up.”

The crisis is sucking more and more of the middle class into bankruptcy and homelessness. Leo once enjoyed a successful working career in Athens before the economic crisis killed his business. He lost everything last year. “I found myself by the end of September in 2011 on the streets, unable to pay rents, unable to pay the rent of the studio, and not having any cash left,” he said. Leo slept on park benches for 45 days before coming to the Klimaka Homeless Centre for help. “We talk about the new homeless generation: people that up until recently, they had a good standard of living,” Anta Alamanou, who runs the shelter, said.

At the Medecins du Monde free medical clinic in Athens, doctors said they’re treating more and more members of the middle class who are now unable to get medical care and lifesaving medicine from Greek hospitals. “We have many people that have come here who have been off their medications for months because they didn’t have the means to buy them,” Dr. Aspasia Mihalaki told CBN News. Greece’s medical system is breaking down. As hospitals run out of money, they’re unable to pay for needed medicine. Greece reportedly owes pharmaceutical companies one and half billion euros.

Mihalki calls it a humanitarian crisis. She said many of her patients have thought about killing themselves. “We see a lot of depression and anxiety disorders. Many of them even saying they want to commit suicide,” she said. While European Union leaders regularly unveil bigger and better bailout plans, there is a growing consensus within the EU that Greece is a “hopeless case” and will have to leave the Eurozone. Most agree that returning to the old currency, the drachma, will turn a bad situation into a catastrophic one. Economist Panos Tsakloglou said if Greece leaves the euro, he expects chaos.

“The first thing will be a run on the banks, a collapse of the economy, followed by complete economic and political chaos,” Tsakloglou said.   Inflation will soar making basic food items scarce and unaffordable. Greek officials have said they fear civil war.   “It is a real possibility that you will walk into a grocery store, and all you will find on the shelves will be vinegar and salt,” former government economic advisor Elena Panaritis said. “We’re not dealing with a failed economy but a failed state,” she added. “We are dealing with a governing structure that is unable to control itself.   “The fear is that Greece’s problems are so deep, nothing will be able to stop an eventual economic and social meltdown.

DEMOCRATS – REPUBLICANS AND THE POLLS

President Obama and Mr. Romney are still running close to even in recent polls with voters more focused on Obama’s handling of the nation’s flagging economy than any other issue. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows Romney at 47% among registered voters and Obama at 46%. All polls are very close at this point in time with the collective average showing Obama with a 1.2% lead. The findings continue a steady pattern, with neither the incumbent nor the challenger able to sustain clear momentum, despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars in television ads – most of them negative – and exchanging some of the harshest rhetoric seen in a modern presidential campaign.

Mr. Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan has caused the Republican Party ¢â‚¬â„¢s conservative base to grow more enthusiastic about the ticket. The two parties are making their pitches to an electorate stuck in a deeply pessimistic mood. More than 8 in 10 give the economy negative marks and nearly 7 in 10 see the country as seriously off track, an assessment that has not changed significantly all year. The Post-ABC survey highlights the dominance of the economy as an issue in the 2012 election. Seventy-two percent of voters say Obama’s handling of the economy will be a “major factor” in their vote this November. The Obamacare program is viewed negatively by a large margin of voters.

Just 20% see Romney’s handling of his tax returns as very important to their vote. Despite attention on these other issues, both campaigns recognize the dominance of the economic concerns. The National Debt Clock is said to have recently hit the $16 Trillion mark. Obama continues to get more negative than positive reviews for his handling of the economy, and there is tepid confidence that the economy may get back on track in a second Obama term. Romney now holds a slim, seven-point edge among registered voters when it comes to handling the economy. Romney also has a clear edge when it comes to dealing with the federal budget deficit. On all other issues, the two are about even.

Another indicator of why the race for the White House remains so close is the public’s judgment of Obama’s overall performance. In this latest poll, his approval rating is 50% positive to 46% negative among all Americans. Among registered voters, 47% say they approve and 50% say they disapprove. The near-even appraisal continues to put Obama in a tenuous position for re-election. Newfound enthusiasm for Romney probably stems in part from his selection of Mr. Ryan as his running mate. Very conservative voters overwhelmingly approve of Mr Ryan and are now more likely to be “definite” Republican voters.

For the first time, enthusiasm among conservative voters for Romney rivals that of the liberals for Obama. The latest poll points to divisions that have defined the Obama vs Romney contest all year. Prominent among them is a gender gap, with 49% of female voters backing Obama and 43% supporting Romney, while men break 51% to 42% in favour of Romney. White voters break for Romney by 18 percentage points. Non-whites are going with Obama by better than three to one, but the recent decision by the Democratic Party to endorse homosexual marriage is expected to narrow that margin. Many Hispanic and Black Christians find this decision intolerable and have spoken out against it.

SURVEY ON RELIGIOUS HOSTILITY IN U.S. RELEASED

The Family Research Council and Liberty Institute recently released The Survey of Religious Hostility in America, a compilation of more than 600 documented incidents of hostility to religion that have occurred in the United States – most of them over the last 10 years. The organizations’ presidents, Tony Perkins and Kelly Shackelford, respectively, presented the survey and its findings at the recent Republican National Convention at the Marriott Waterside Hotel in Tampa, FL. Examples of the increasing hostility to religion described in the 140-page report include:

¢â‚¬ ¢                   A federal judge threatened “incarceration” to a high school valedictorian unless she removed references to Jesus from her graduation speech.

¢â‚¬ ¢                   City officials prohibiting senior citizens from praying over their meals, listening to religious messages or singing gospel songs at a senior activities centre.

¢â‚¬ ¢                   A public school official physically lifting an elementary school student from his seat and reprimanding him in front of his classmates for praying over his lunch.

¢â‚¬ ¢                   A public school official who prevented a student from handing out flyers inviting her classmates to an event at her church.

¢â‚¬ ¢                   A public university’s law school banning a Christian organization because it required its officers to adhere to a statement of faith with which the university   disagreed.

¢â‚¬ ¢                   The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs banning the mention of God from veterans’ funerals, overriding the wishes of the families of the deceased.

¢â‚¬ ¢                   A federal judge holding that prayers before a state House of Representatives could be to Allah but not to Jesus.

“America today would be unrecognizable to our Founders,” remarked Shackelford ahead of the survey’s release. “We are facing a relentless onslaught from well-funded and aggressive groups and individuals who are using the courts, Congress, and the vast federal bureaucracy to suppress and limit religious freedom. This radicalized minority is driven by an anti-religious ideology that is turning the First Amendment upside down.” Perkins noted: “As dark as this survey is, there is much light. The secularists’ agenda only advances when those who love liberty are apathetic. Let this be a call to stand for religious liberty in the United States.”

While the survey provides evidence of growing numbers and severity of offenses to religious freedom in U.S. churches, schools and in the public arena, it also shows that those persons and organizations that stand up for religious liberty are winning. The survey can be downloaded in its entirety for free at  http://www.religioushostility.org/   Pray for God’s wisdom and love to be spread abroad in the hearts of all Americans. Pray for the Lord’s grace to be shed upon the lives of all her citizens. Pray for a renewed awareness of God’s provision of wisdom and Godly insight for their national leaders. “A nation without God’s guidance is a nation without order. Happy are those who keep God’s law!” (Proverbs 29:18)

CHURCHES TAKE A BREAK FROM SUNDAY SERVICES AND PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH

Nearly 1,000 people from a number of evangelical churches in Minnesota plan to help their neighbours by painting houses, picking up trash, cleaning school playgrounds and public parks, offering free vehicle oil changes to single parents and hosting a basketball clinic. “It’s kind of breaking the mould, getting outside of the church and connecting with people,” said Carl Nelson, president of Transform Minnesota, a network of nearly 160 evangelical churches helping to organize the event. “We’re really serious about our faith and willing to step out and just simply serve people, no strings attached.”

The churches join a growing trend for Churches to cancel Sunday services to perform charitable acts as a way of showing they’re not only concerned with fighting gay marriage and abortion but also care about helping the poor and needy. “I think church people generally have a bad name, and we’re hoping to change that,” said one Pastor. “As they see church people helping people they won’t think we’re hypocrites. I think cancelling the service on Sunday shows the community, ‘Hey, we really think you’re important and want to come and share God’s love with you. We want to serve you.'” Another Pastor said. “In a way, we’re not cancelling anything. We’re just moving church to the community.”

Ed Stetzer, from a Christian firm that tracks church trends nationwide, says he’s seen an increase in congregations swapping Sunday services for service projects. He notes however, such a symbolic gesture could leave the impression that worship is less important. Stetzer said in a statement, “There are 167 hours a week where that can be done. So I am hesitant to cancel worshipping Jesus so we might serve in his name. I think we can do both.” Pray that churches will know the best way to be lights on a hill and to be that salt that blesses all those around them in their communities. Pray that God will give each church a way to fulfil great demonstrations of faith and love in expression and action.

NEIL ARMSTRONG TOOK COMMUNION ON THE MOON

America recently mourned the death of Neil Armstrong (82), the man who’s first steps on the moon changed history. On July 20, 1969, the world watched Armstrong’s moment on the moon and listened to those famous words: “That’s one small step for man… one giant leap for mankind.” “I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning Neil’s passing – a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew,” Eugene “Buzz” Aldrin, Armstrong’s crewmate on the mission, said on Twitter. “As a young girl watching Neil Armstrong step on the moon, the stars came a little bit closer and my world and expectations quite a bit larger,” Mae Jemison, the first African-American female astronaut, tweeted.

“He took something that 20 years earlier was pure fantasy and turned it into reality. And if we could do that for space, we could do it for anything,” Howard McCurdy, a professor of space and public policy at American University, said. Despite Armstrong’s great accomplishment, he never wanted to be in the spotlight. After returning from the moon he moved back to a small town in Ohio, taught college, and raised a family. Armstrong rarely spoke to the media, but in one of his last interviews, he said his greatest disappointment is that he never once had a dream about his walk on the moon.

Aldrin, a Presbyterian elder at the time, planned a special commemoration for the moon landing. He carried a communion wafer and a small vial of communion wine that had been blessed by his pastor. After the lunar module touched down, Aldrin asked everyone to take a moment to give thanks in their own way. He then read scripture and took communion on the moon with Armstrong. Aldrin wanted the event to be broadcast back to earth but NASA decided against it since it was embroiled in a lawsuit with atheist Madelyn O ¢â‚¬â„¢Hair over a reading from Genesis when Apollo 8 circled the moon months earlier. Americans never knew about the communion ceremony on the moon until years later.

MAJORITY OF AMERICANS WANT ABORTION PROHIBITED

CNN has released the results of a new poll showing a majority of Americans want all or most abortions prohibited. The survey asked: “Do you think abortion should be legal under any circumstances, under only certain circumstances, or illegal in all circumstances?” Some 62% want abortions illegal in all cases or only in certain instances while just 35% want abortions legal for any reason. Breaking down the question further, 52% said abortion should be illegal in all (15%) or most circumstances (37%) while just 44% said abortions should be legal in all (35%) or most (9%) circumstances.

CNN asked if abortion should be allowed when the woman’s life is endangered. Americans agreed with that on a 88% to 9% margin. In cases of rape and incest, Americans supported legal abortions on a 83% to 14% margin. And when the woman’s health is supposedly in danger from the pregnancy, Americans were alright with abortion on a 83% to 12% margin. It is clear that Americans only support abortion in the most rare instances and clearly oppose it when it is chosen for convenience, social or birth control reasons. Thank the Lord that there are so many in America that realizes abortion is wrong. Pray that abortion in America will be stopped.

HIV/AIDS EPIDEMIC IN WASHINGTON DC

Many thousands of Washington DC residents are now infected with HIV. The figure of 2.7% far surpasses the 1 per cent threshold that constitutes a “generalized and severe” epidemic according to health officials. “We have every mode of transmission”  ¢â‚¬“ men having sex with men, heterosexual and injected drug use”, and we have to deal with them,” said a spokesman in the District’s HIV/AIDS Administration. Please pray in repentance, cry out for mercy, for divine intervention in the protection of children, teens and young adults, and for the city officials to address the moral roots of this epidemic. Pray that the pastors of Washington, DC will address this moral breakdown and epidemic from their pulpits.

INDIA: UNRELENTING PERSECUTION
——————————

by Elizabeth Kendal

Persecution of the Church in India is unrelenting, primarily due to the
Hindu nationalists’ incitement of racial and religious hatred; the
impunity afforded to violent persecutors; and the authorities’ lack of
political will. The following incidents were recorded by the Evangelical
Fellowship of India. They are typical – and the tip of the iceberg.

On 24 September, 12 Hindu extremists disrupted a prayer meeting in
Kandhamal, Orissa, verbally abusing the believers and chasing them out
into the forest. When junior pastor Mantu Nayak tripped and fell, the
Hindus beat him mercilessly, leaving him with head injuries and fractures
in both arms. On 11 September police in Kashganj, Uttar Pradesh, accused
Christians of ‘forcible conversions’. The next day, a mob of armed Hindus
arrived and threatened the believers, demanding they ‘return’ to Hinduism.
Reacting against news of an impending Christian inter-caste marriage, the
Hindus drove the bride-to-be and her family out of the area. On 7
September Pastor John Pargy was distributing gospel tracts quietly when he
was accused of insulting Hinduism. He was then assaulted and arrested.   On
4 September Pastor Anand Nirala was arrested in Jangir Champa,
Chhattisgarh, after Hindus accused him of ‘forced’ conversions, insulting
Hindu deities and disturbing social harmony. On 1 September Hindu
extremists in Balod, Chhattisgarh, stoned a church and beat the pastor and
believers. The next day, a 600-strong mob returned and terrorised the
believers, eventually driving them from their homes. On 26 August a large
mob of Hindu extremists burst into a prayer meeting in Kanyakumari, Tamil
Nadu, and violently attacked the believers, leaving two Christians
seriously injured. Accusing the believers of ‘forced conversions’, the
Hindus rampaged through the village. One local Christian, Edwin Raj, was
beaten to death.

On 29 August the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI) had a minor and
partial victory when the High Court of Himachal Pradesh struck out one
section of the Himachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (HPFR Act), a law
that regulates conversions. The judge struck out section 4, which mandated
that anyone intending to change their religion must inform the district
administration 30 days before conversion takes place – essentially to
obtain permission – or else face a fine. Whilst the judge ruled that
section 4 violated a person’s right to privacy, he did not agree with the
EFI that the HPFR Act, which criminalises religious ‘force’, ‘fraud’ and
‘inducement’, violated the constitutional right to religious freedom.
[‘Force’, ‘fraud’ and ‘inducement’ are defined in a way that effectively
criminalises virtually all Christian witness. In India, ‘freedom of
religion’ is essentially understood as freedom from religious
‘interference’.]

According to the High Court, freedom of religion must be subject to the
interests of public law and order. Though Christians are said to have full
rights, in practice conversions and Christian witness must be restricted
if they lead to Hindu rioting. This is exactly the same backward thinking
involved in Islamic blasphemy legislation. Confident they will be
appeased, religious dictators incite violence, blame the victim and
extract concessions. Though governments might find appeasement expedient
in the short term, in the long term it is disastrous as it legitimises
intolerance, justifies violence and fuels persecution.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY –

* for God to grace India with awakening, so that Indians will see they
are being fed lies and deprived of religious freedom by religious
dictators out to perpetuate their own caste privilege.   ‘. . . let
justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing
stream.’ (Amos 5:24 ESV)

* for God to grace the Indian government with discernment, conviction and
courage to deal with Hindu nationalist propaganda before it devours the
nation.

* that the Church will continue to grow in spite of repression and
violent persecution, as God adds to her number daily those who are
being saved.

* that the LORD of hosts will be a protective shield and strong, safe
fortress to every Indian believer, particularly those pastors and
evangelists who risk life and liberty to share the Gospel and serve the
people in the name of Jesus.

UNRELENTING PERSECUTION IN INDIA

Persecution of the Church in India is unrelenting, primarily due to the
Hindu nationalists’ incitement of racial and religious hatred, the
impunity afforded violent persecutors and the authorities’ lack of
political will. ‘Religious Freedom’ laws define ‘force’, ‘fraud’ and
‘coercion’ in ways that criminalise virtually all Christian witness. Such
laws are a gift to the Hindu nationalists who incite violence, blame the
victims and are appeased with impunity and restrictions on egalitarian
Christianity that the high-caste Hindus recognise as a threat to their own
caste privilege. The government is reluctant and even afraid to tackle
Hindu propaganda. Consequently the propaganda flourishes, fuelling
religious hostility and creating an incendiary environment. The situation
is extremely dangerous. Please pray for the Church in India.

URGENT UPDATES

* KENYA: TERROR THREAT. On 14 September police in Nairobi uncovered a
large cache of weapons, foiling a massive terror plot due to be launched
against churches. Unfortunately, on 30 September a Sunday School class was
bombed, killing one child and wounding nine.

* EGYPT: EXPULSIONS. Christians have been ethnically cleansed out of the
Sinai. What started as jihadists’ terror was completed by the government
of Mohamed Morsi.

* PAKISTAN: BLASPHEMY CASE. The three Muslims who gave sworn testimony
against the imam Khalid Chishti have withdrawn their statements, claiming
to have been coerced. They had testified that he had tampered with
evidence so that the illiterate Christian, Rimsha Masih (14), might be
accused of blasphemy and all Christians subsequently driven from the slum
(see RLPB 173).
