I have heard this cute little "proverb" (for want of a better word)
more times than I can remember and always thought it was sort of
clever...until I tried it myself (actually, I didn't point an accusing
finger at anyone in particular, I just pointed in front of me).
And you know what? They don't point at me at all! They actually curl
right around and point inwards to my hand. It's quite awkward and
unnatural to make them point back at me. Of course one could argue
that since the hand is part of me, then those three finger are indeed
pointing back at me. However, this doesn't feel satisfying, since
accusing fingers are conventionally pointed at the head of the
accused, not the extremities.
I also wonder if that means people 45 degrees to the right of the
accused are typically guilty of something as well, since that's where
my thumb seems to want to point (after curling right under my three
back-pointers). Of course, left-handed accusers would expect to find
additional guilty parties to their left.
(You're supposed to be laughing at this point.)
Cheers,
Marcelo
