Exploring Eternity

As kids we could see our faces and the backs of our heads simultaneously, for our family bathroom had two mirror doors that opened towards each other.

Carefully positioning these mirrors enabled us to look beyond these two images; into a continuous line of reflections. Yet on reflection ¢â‚¬”please pardon the pun ¢â‚¬”I recall ; the images reducing in size, in lightness and in detail as this line retreated into the distance.

This line of images offered my first conscious encounter with something that could go on forever.

Cloudless, moonless night skies offer similar glimpses of eternity; with countless stars pin-pricking the limitless sky ¢â‚¬â„¢s velvet blackness. Such glimpses may prompt us to question our personal significance; but just like the mirror images, they are unreachable.

God knows that life is too short for us to be pre-occupied with mirrors or random cloudless night skies. So he stepped into our world as one of us through Jesus Christ ¢â‚¬”within reach, up close and personal.

Jesus came to offer us a whole new beginning that leads us into forever as we get to know him. Yet accepting his offer takes us beyond fascination about our significance; for he wants us to see how his grace working through us can bring positive change into our circles of influence.

Then even plain-vanilla people like us can step into our world with an eternal perspective, and enough warmth to affirm the significance of people around us ¢â‚¬“even if they can ¢â‚¬â„¢t see this significance for themselves.
