[1] THE CROSS OF CHRIST

“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ ….” (Galationas 6:14). Sir John Bowring was a very gifted naturalist, linguist, statesman and financier. He could write in thirteen languages and dialects. At one time he was the Governor of Hong Kong.

On one occasion when he was in the Orient, he was viewing an area of devastation caused by an earthquake. What stood out in stark contrast to the destruction that surrounded him in every direction was the tower of a church standing tall among the ruins of the city and on the top of the tower was a lone cross. Sir John was so moved by this overpowering sight he was inspired to write the words of the well-known hymn, “In the Cross of Christ I glory, Towering o’er the wrecks of time.”

In our world of turmoil, heartache, and disappointment there is no greater symbol of hope than the cross of Jesus Christ. True, the cross is a symbol of Christ’s death and of God’s judgment against man’s sin, but above all, the cross of Christ is the towering symbol of God’s love, forgiveness, and His promise and hope of eternal life for all who accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior (See [2] below).

Suggested prayer: “Dear God, how can I ever thank you enough for the cross of Jesus Christ and for your gift of forgiveness and the hope of eternal life when I accept Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior. Help me to thank you with my life. Gratefully in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
