SERVICE

A wise man once remarked that even sheep become beautiful to those who do not see them as so much potential mutton.

Now that is a profound saying. The wise man meant that nothing can be seen at its true worth and dignity while men look upon it as existing, primarily, for their personal benefit. It is fatal to look at things and people merely to see what we get out of it, or them. If we see instead what is decent and beautiful, especially in those around us, our approach will be with respect.

Over the centuries men have sought God for favours rather than for his real worth. That is why many have not found him, or have found him very disappointing. Someone once said that evil did not enter the world when Adam ate the apple, but when he first began to shout, “Me, My, Mine.”

What a different world it would be if we could approach those who serve without regarding them as people who exist to do our will. If only we could take the trouble to realise how difficult, monotonous and demanding their job often is, and with what fortitude they carry on. If we did, we would soon realise how fine and dignified most people are. They would become somebodies if we gave them half a chance of revealing themselves at their real worth, rather than as for their worth to us. The moment we look at them as human beings with cares and worries, perhaps a great deal more difficult than our own, they become to us what they actually are. Not as potential mutton, but someone good to know and may have much to teach us.

Heaven forbid that we should be patronising. With just a little imagination we might at least see those whose job it is to serve us against the background of their anxieties and hopes. We have the highest authority for believing that men and women are a great deal more worthwhile than sheep.
