I am just finishing up the little book on *HUMILITY* by Andrew Murray, and can almost grasp what is being taught. BTW this fellow died in 1917.
On page 110 in the *notes* he says, “Could you see what every stirring of pride does to your soul, you would beg of everything you meet to tear the viper from you, though with the loss of a hand or an eye. Could you see what a sweet, divine, transforming power there is in humility, how it expels the poison of your nature, and makes room for the Spirit of God to live in you, you would rather wish to be the foot-stool of all the world rather than want the smallest degree of it.”
Then:
“Our salvation consists wholly in being saved from OURSELVES, or that which we are by nature. In the whole nature of things nothing could be this salvation or savior to us but such a humility of God as is beyond all expression. “Except a man denies himself, he cannot be My disciple.'”
Much much more to consider from this little book. The theme of ALL his books is, “Empty yourself and allow God to fill you. God will not work in a person who is filled with self. Pride versus Humility. We can’t have them both.”
Here is something I put on the list ever so often. The one who wrote this must have read Murray’s book because much of his teaching was included in it.

DYING TO SELF
When you are forgotten, or neglected, or purposely set at naught, And you don’t sting and hurt With the insult or the oversight, But your heart is happy, being counted worthy to suffer for Christ,
THAT IS DYING TO SELF
When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed, Your advise disregarded, your opinions ridiculed and you refuse To let anger rise in your heart, or even defend yourself But take it all patient in, loving silence,
THAT IS DYING TO SELF
When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder, and irregularity, any unpctuality, or any annoyance, when you stand fact-to-face with waste, folly, extravagance, spiritual insensibility-and endure it.. As Jesus endured–
THAT IS DYING TO SELF
When you are content with any food, any offering, any climate, any society, any raiment, any interruption by the will of God,
THAT IS DYING TO SELF
When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation or Record your own good works, or itch after commendations, When you can truly love to be unknown,
THAT IS DYING TO SELF
When you can see your brother prosper and have his needs met and can honestly rejoice with him in Spirit and feel no envy, nor question God, while your own needs are far greater and in desperate circumstances,
THAT IS DYING TO SELF
When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less stature than yourself and can humbly submit inwardly as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or resentment rising up within your heart,
THAT IS DYING TO SELF
Are you dead yet? In these last days the Spirit would bring us to the cross “That I may know Him…being made conformable unto His death.” Phil. 3:10
