Saint Augustine says that the one who fears God diligently seeks his will in the Holy Scriptures. The Psalms of David can be especially beneficial in times of trouble. God speaks to us in the Scriptures. Scripture tells us, “Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can know the Spirit of God: every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh belongs to God, and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus does not belong to God” (1 John 4:1-3). Put your faith in Christ first, and everything else will fall into place. That’s my best advice.

You may also want to read the entire Book of Ecclesiastes which considers the work done in this life a chase after wind. “And I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to rejoice in his work; for this is his lot. Who will let him see what is to come after him?” (Ecclesiastes 3:22). Also, “Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart, because it is now that God favors your works” (Ecclesiastes 9:7). Again, read the whole book to catch the flavor of these passages. I also encourage you to read the Gospel of John: “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal” (John 6:27).
