THE FONT OF WISDOM
“Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding? ‘To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.'” – Job 12:12-13
Robert Grosseteste was born in 1170 in Suffolk, England. A brilliant student, he was educated at Oxford University in law, medicine, languages, sciences, and theology.
He became the first Chancellor of Oxford in 1215 and was the school’s first teacher of theology. He wrote commentaries on Aristotle’s works and he developed the modern scientific method that systematically used experimentation in scientific inquiry. Grosseteste worked on calendar reform and was the original architect of the Gregorian calendar, the calendar in use today.
The famous scientist Roger Bacon, a student of Grosseteste, wrote: “He knew mathematics and perspective, and there was nothing which he was unable to know, and at the same time he was sufficiently acquainted with languages to be able to understand the saints and the philosophers and the wise men of antiquity.”
Though he was a gifted scientist, Grosseteste was first and foremost a man of God. He studied the Scriptures and wrote Bible commentaries on how to follow God’s word. He was elected Bishop of Lincoln in 1235 and he held that position for the next eighteen years until his death. He served the Lord by looking to His Word and then equipping and serving the people under his care.
Where can you find wisdom? By looking to the Lord and His Word. Jesus Christ is the font of all wisdom. Today in prayer, thank Christ that all power, counsel and understanding are His. Pray that you will grow in wisdom as you grow closer to Christ.
“Wisdom is seeing life from God’s point of view.” – Bill Gothard
God’s Word: “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” – Proverbs 2:6
