Father Richard Rohr is a Franciscan of the New Mexico Province. He was the founder of the New Jerusalem Community in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1971, and the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1986. After the initial founding periods he handed both groups over to lay leadership and direction. New Jerusalem is still and alive community today in Cincinnati, and Richard presently works with the Center in Albuquerque.
He is probably best known for his numerous audio and video tapes which are distributed by St. Anthony Messenger Press, Credence Cassettes, and through the Center’s newletter, Radical Grace. Articles by Fr. Richard have appeared in numerous publications, many of his tapes have come out in 14 different books, and many of those translated into other languages. His bes know books are Simplicity, The Wild Man’s Journey, Quest for the Grail, Jesus Plan for a New World, and Job and the Mystery of Suffering. His continuing best selling tapes are the 10 tape overview called The Great Themes of Scripture.
Richard was born in 1943 in Kansas. He entered the Franciscans in 1961 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1970. He received his Master’s Degreee in Theology from the the University of Dayton, and did futher studies in Scripture at the University of Notre Dame and the University of San Francisco.
He now lives in a hermitage behind his Franciscan community in Albuquerque, and divides his time between local work, the county jail, and preaching and teaching on all continents. He considers the proclaimation of the Gospel to be his primary call, and uses many different platforms to communicate that message. Scripture as liberation, the integration of action and contemplation, community building, peace and justice issues, male spirituality, the enneagram, and eco-spirituality would all be themes that he makes use of for the sake of the Gospel.
His latest books are Hope Against Darkness, put out by St. Anthony Messenger Press, and Everything Belongs put our by Crossroad Press. He soon hopes to put out a book on Male Initiation Rites. Other works both in audio and in written form:
