TRIBUTE FOR STEWART DINNEN
To describe Stewart Dinnen is almost impossible. Man of faith, prayer, passion and vision would be only part of the story. He was a preacher, pastor, teacher, writer, missionary statesman and great leader of God’s work.
Mission was his passion and his life was lived since he and Marie joined WEC in 1949 with a deep desire to extend the Kingdom of God worldwide. Through his long life of ministry he became Director of Studies at WEC’s Scottish Missionary Training College, then Candidate Director in the USA, Principal of the Missionary Training College in Tasmania, International Leadership Training Officer, International Director and finally Ambassador-at -large for WEC.
He was deeply committed to the Bible and loved to explain its profound truths simply to help people all round the world understand it was living and relevant. He was convinced that Christians are united with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection. To him this was liberating truth and the key to power in service. He travelled tirelessly to churches, conferences and mission fields to share powerfully and with telling illustrations.
He was mentor to so many. He was interested in people and was keen to stimulate their progress.
His life affected thousands of people. All who hear of his passing will have many memories of him – spiritual, funny, musical, kindly, challenging and full of faith.
His writings have been prodigious since his retirement from the post of International Director. There are 13 books in print and several other manuals. As far as I know he had three books underway at the time of his death. He has left a legacy to all to emulate the life of Jesus and those who have served Him.
Personally I can never underestimate the impact of Stewart’s life and example. To me he was a spiritual father and friend. He was always pushing me on and keen to see WEC develop and progress.
The WEC family around the world will be eternally grateful for his contribution. Leadership was given a great push forward. Stewart gave us a very clear perspective and clarified strategies for us. He challenged the whole mission to avoid complacency and reach out for all God had for us. Jenny and I extend our sincerest love to Marie, Ruth, Grace and the family.
Stewart will be missed for his consistency and commitment. He was a ‘Jesus man’.
