Recently a reader requested information dealing with sexual abuse.
Cleon Dowlen, a family counselor from Midland, Texas sent us the following list of
resources.
1."The Wounded Heart by Dan Allender – There is a book and a workbook that is
especially good for group work.
2. Helping Victims of Sexual Abuse by Heitritter & Vought – A good book that
outlines support group material for Survivors and helpers. I’m using this with a church
here locally to set up support groups (or growth groups).
3. Survivors and Partners by Paul Hansen – Especially good for the spouses of
survivors. I use this in counseling with those trying to live with someone working through
the healing process.
4. Sexual Assault by Kay Scott – This is more about rape, though it is helpful in other
situations as well. Written by a woman who was raped and struggled to freedom in this.
Also a helpful chapter to the spouses.
5. The Healing Path by Dan Allender – I’ve only recently purchased this book and have
only scanned it but from what I see and based on the author, I would already recommend it.
It is a more general book about healing the hurts from the past. There is also a study
guide that can be purchased separately.
A couple of others that are good but less recommended are "I Never Called It
Rape" by Warshaw and "Recovering From Rape" by Ledray.
Thanks for your work on behalf of families."
