As a single woman, I want to witness to a way of living that
liberates me from inordinate attachment to the world of power,
pleasure and possession so that I can serve the Lord as an instrument
of transformation. My singleness frees me to see God’s image in
creation so that I can reverence the earth as his dwelling place, as
the House of God. Living from this faith horizon, I am free to flow
with God’s will in the situation, free to travel lightly, unencumbered
by the weight of self-will and its futile projects of salvation…
Singleness is thus destined to generate a joyful spirituality that
enables us to serve God in whatever walk of life he places us. The
single soul is able to soar free and to experience moments of playful
carelessness because of its being cared for by God. Such graced
experiences transform us into grateful people who live in happy
dependence upon the merciful kindness of our loving Lord. Our
whole life is an exercise in gratitude as we try to reproduce his
goodness in our own attitudes and actions.
How sad that many associate singleness with long, gloomy faces and
endless frustrations. The limits of this life open up exciting
possibilities for meaning and creativity. The vocation to the single
life offers opportunity for solitude and communion, for reflection
and action, for an awareness of and a witness to the oneness each of
us experiences in the heart of Christ.
