As a matter of interest, do you know anything about J.H. Kellogg, who wrote that article? An extremely odd character.

With his brother, he invented corn flakes (yes, it’s the same Kellogg)

to be part of a diet intended to stifle the desire to masturbate. At his institute, the Battle Creek Sanitarium, he also promoted enemas (up to five times a day) as a substitute for sex.

So when he says, “alcohol is a poison under all circumstances and in all doses”, take it with a grain of salt.

A choice quote from his classic work entitled “The Itinerary of a Breakfast: A Popular Account of the Travels of a Breakfast through the Food Tube and of the Ten Gates and Several Stations through Which It Passes, also of the Obstacles Which It Sometimes Meets” (1918):

All civilized people are house-broken, and like poor house-broken dogs, pay for this sinister education an infinite price, not only in misery and inefficiency, but in deadly disease and shortened life […] A new and sensitive colon conscience must be developed among civilized people if the world is to be saved from the soul- and body- and even race-destroying effects of universal constipation and world wide autointoxication.

Also recommended, if you like this sort of thing, is the 1994 film “The Road to Wellville”, which is an interesting portrayal of life at Dr Kellogg’s sanitarium. Check the rating first, though. This is not a film for everyone.

Sorry to bring the tone of the group down a bit, but I just wanted to share. Believe me, you’ll never look at a bowl of cornflakes the same way again.
