Yes, it’s awful, but home-grown. (home-groan?)
So there’s our hero, the Spitfire pilot during the Battle of Britain, chasing the old enemy, the Messerschmidt, back across the Channel to the coast of occupied France. As he crosses the coast of France however, full of adrenalin in his hot pursuit of the foe, he is incautious enough to fly quite low, and the undersides of his petrol tanks are riddled by ground fire from the German troops below. He soon sees the rapid fall in his fuel levels, and realises that at this rate of loss, he will not be able to reach dear old Blighty, let alone his airfield. In a moment of brilliance, he inverts his aircraft, so that the holes in his fuel tanks are on top, and flies in this fashion back across the famous white cliffs. He has just enough fuel left to reach his airfield, turn his Spitfire the right way up, and land normally, thus saving his own life and a valuable aircraft. And the moral of the tale?……….. yes, of course…. scroll down….
