A phew of my memories from 56 years ago:
Horses and carts.
Trams.
Trolleybuses.
Steam Engines.
Scammel 3-wheel vans and BR artics with 3-wheel front ends painted in “Blood and Custard” livery. (BR=British Rail)
Euston Road was two lanes and Seaton Street Market was still there. (They demolished the market to widen the road and the traffic’s more solid than ever now!)
Barrel Organs (Street pianos)
Warren Street full of dodgy second-hand car dealers.
Going on holiday with all the stuff in dad’s cardboard de-mob suitcase.
(De-mob= Demobilisation. They gave ’em a cheap case to take their stuff home in.)
No fridge – instead a wooden cupboard with perforated zinc to keep the flies out, laughably known as a Meat Safe!
I tin bath hanging up in the yard we took turns in once a month.
Boiling up the water on the kitchen range.
No telly.
Wind-up gramophones.
Big wooden wireless sets with glass things that glowed inside.
Bakalite phones and button A and B in call boxes.
No parking restrictions. :o)
Nobody could afford a car! :o(
A Park Keeper at every gate of Regents Park.
Popular music aimed at everyone – not just the young – and with the drums in the background if any and and real melodies which, heaven forbid, actually changed key now and again!!
Dansette record players.
Bert Weedon’s guitar tutorial books. (That’s when the rot set in!!)
You tell the kids of today that . . . . and they won’t believe yer!!
Muzzeltov!!!
