Peter suggests that making people sing makes them uncomfortable because our society shuns singing.
I don’t think singing as such is the problem. The great majority of people sing in the shower, sing along to the car radio, and generally sing happily in private. It is singing in public that is the problem. Those poor old pre-match football players know the camera is zooming in on their mumbling lips and it probably makes them more uncomfortable.
I would strongly suggest that this old tradition we have of STANDING UP TO SING is what makes people uncomfortable. In a typical church service, the knees get such a workout, and to what purpose? People who are uncomfortable with singing will be even more uncomfortable if they have to stand up and be more exposed to public view, not to mention the wear and tear on the knees.
