October 17, 2002 STRESS HITTING SCOTTISH CLERGY (C of E Newspaper)
12. STRESS HITTING SCOTTISH CLERGY (C of E Newspaper) More than a quarter of clergy in the Church of Scotland are struggling in their marriages because of the demands of the post, according to a new survey. Nearly 40 per cent of those questioned revealed that they had considered leaving the ministry because of the pressure of the work, which more than two-thirds said was resulting in them suffering from stress. One in 10 clergy are not even taking a day off, with only a slightly higher percentage having more than a single day off. Every Church of Scotland minister was sent the questionnaire by Life & Work, the Church’s official magazine, and 55 per cent responded. The survey found that more than three-quarters regularly surpass the European Working Time Directive, which caps the working week at 48 hours. With over 40 per cent claiming that they work between 57 and 72 hours each week, it puts Church of Scotland ministers in to a similar bracket to doctors and nurses. This is taking its toll on family life, as 28 per cent said that their marriage had been adversely affected by the demands of the post.
