If and when you have time would you be able to explain this verse to me, I know you must be busy so if it’s not possible, that’s ok.
Dear Anne,
At last I am replying to your email query regarding Mt 23:9 (your comment appears below).
In saying this, Jesus was most likely rejecting the authority of the ungodly religious teachers in Jerusalem (see also Mt 21:43). He seems to be teaching that leaders in the church (Matthew wrote his Gospel primarily for the Jewish church) that they should not seek positions and titles in order to receive praise from men and women. The title “Father” can be used in a spirit of superiority or exclusivity. This goes against the NT emphasis on our equality in Christ, and on the principle of humble servant leadership.
However, the title “Father” is used in the NT of senior Christians (e.g. 1 Jn 2:13f). I believe the issue centres on the character and manner of life of the one called “Father.” A good test is how the person would respond if the title was withdrawn. Would it change their ministry? Their self-esteem? There is a huge difference between status and standing. It is a person’s standing that commends the Gospel.
