How To Increase Giving

(A ‘Sharpen your axe’ column)

“If you don’t sharpen your axe, it will be harder to use” (Ecclesiastes 10:10, CEV).

Spend even a short time in Christian leadership and you’ll discover that there’s a big gap between what God says about generous giving and its consistent practice. Here’s how to help close the gap and get your church on a healthier track.

1. Instruct. Teach your people the basic biblical principles about giving. As a regular part of your ministry, teach the truth, encourage their efforts, challenge them to grow, and show appreciation for what they give.

2. Inspire. Communicate a clear vision of what you believe God desires to see accomplished in your church. Be clear on where you’re headed, and how you will get there. Provide hope-the element that helps people connect faith to reality.

3. Invite. Jesus was never afraid to ask people to make sacrifices. Keep in mind that it’s not about money but heart and mission. It’s about a better future.
