I remember being impresssed by Alan Richardson's Theology of the New
Testament, where, if I recall it correctly, he says election in the
Bible has nothing to do with an _individual's_ salvation (it's leaders
of nations or representative leaders who are addressed in the O and
NTs). 

Further, election has nothing to do with _eternal salvation_. In the
O&NT those who are the elect are same to be obedient, do good works,
etc.
