How can God be three persons? Or in other words, how can God be a trinity? To be perfectly honest I’m not really sure. And I’m not really sure that any answer from any theologian, ancient or modern, that I have read, as ever really given me a satisfactory answer. Not that I’m really concerned to have a definitive answer. I’m much more awe-inspired by the mystery of the notion of the Trinity. Certainly the Church down through the ages has wasted too much valuable time in conflict over the metaphysics of the Trinity. It would be far better, I believe, if we spent our time on living out the reality of the three persons of God – Creator, Redeemer and Reconciler. Maybe we should start with questions like these:

Do we strive to be like God the Creator? Do we create and enrich creation in everyday life? Do we strive to do things that protect the environment? Do we recognise God’s presence in all creatures and care for them as their Creator does? Do we endeavour to be re/creation/al whenever there is sin, corruption, misunderstanding and schism between peoples? Do we strive re-image God the Creator and Sustainer for all?

Do I reflect Gods the Son, Jesus Christ ? Am I a channel through which others will come to salvation? Do my friends and family recognise the radical values of the Kingdom of God through my presence in their lives? Do I live for justice, mercy and compassion as did Jesus? How do I share the Good News with others that brings glory to God and yet maintains the integrity of my specific spiritual gifts? Do I image God the Son for those around me who are lost?

Are we motivated by God the Spirit? Do I step out and take risks? Do I trust the Holy Spirit and go where the Spirit blows? Do I make use of the gifts that God the Spirit has given me? Do I make time for the Holy Spirit in my life – do I allow the Spirit to bring God’s wisdom of truth and discernment – even when it is painful and uncomfortable? Do I encourage openness and transparency in myself and others? Do I image the Holy Spirit faithfully in spite of personal cost?
