Does ‘traditional evangelistic[evangelical?]/Pentecostal teaching’ engender fear? If so, why?

There is an over-emphasis in many of these groups on the place of demons and possession. I am currently in the process of helping a woman who had become almost obbsessed by the fear that had been generated by only a relatively short period of involvement with a Christian Outreach Centre. This is not an uncommon story. One of our parishioners applied for a job at the local Christian School (Evangelical). She was asked to comment on the school’s credal statement. The statement focused almost excusively on the reality and role of the devil and evil. God and love were hardly mentioned.

I recently attended a youth for Christ rally and the eveangelical message was centred around developing a fear of hell.

So yes, I want to say that fear does play a large role in the message promoted by these groups.

These are very sad examples, and a distortion of Christian theology. It reduces the message to one of dualism [as found in Balinese Hindu-Buddhism] where the battle between good and evil is being constantly played out, whereas the gospel says that evil has been defeated. In other words, the Cross deals with our sin, fear etc., and frees us to love.
