Pardon a little contribution from left-field, which I inhabit as both an ‘evangelical’ and a ‘progressive’ (I hope).

Not sure I can offer too much wisdom on all this, but here’s a question: When Jesus and Paul tell us people are ‘lost’ if they’re outside the Kingdom / not ‘in Christ’ (respectively) what does that mean for us?

The fundamentalists think they know the answer (and I believe they’re almost certainly wrong in believing, as Lesslie Newbigin puts it, that ‘preaching the gospel’ equals ‘stanching the avalanche of souls into hell’), but I’m equally sure the liberals are ‘wrong’ in not asking the question…
