The Conservative Mind-Set

First “Chris Ho-Stuart” wrote:

Then MT responded:

Your words are wise in their content but you are being overly optimistic that this will even be looked at by a pentecostal.

1. It does not contain a bible verse. The lack of reference to the bible frightens them.

2. It isn’t written by a “Trew Kristyun”. Fundamentalists view all people as supect who are not bible quoting Christians.

3. The language level would probably be beyond scope. The big words confuse them.

4. This guy is one of the Oneness pentecostal mob who are a breakaway from mainstream pentecostalism. They have their own particular quirks one of which is that all Christians must speak in tongues.

Send him to somewhere like Rowland’s site where a range of Christians have their say on the issue of Creationism http://jmm.org.au/. Let them see that they view is but one among millions of other Christians.

To which I replied:

And I’ll get another pesky email accusing me of heresy (I get several a week – even though I present various points of view)…

Saw an article in The Age yesterday citing a scientific study of the conservative mind: ‘Conservatism can be explained psychologically as a set of neurones rooted in “fear and aggression, dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity”.’

A study funded by, wait for it, the U.S. government!

They say people like Hitler, Mussolini, Ronald Reagon and the right-wing American talkshow host Rush Limbaugh all suffered from the same affliction.

Can anyone find it – or a commentary/summary – on the Web? It’s titled ‘Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition’ (National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health)…

(When I was doing a Masters’ degree at the Uni of Sydney in the Social Sciences, I learned early on that social scientists are people who tell us what everyone knows in language no one can understand 🙂

Shalom!
